It's 2022 not 1922. Full backs should have a good all-round game, overlap consistently and not just be defenders- and this has been the case for years. It was even a key foundation in which Alf Ramsey based his tactics on in the 1970 world cup- Keith Newton ended up being England top assister that tournament too. This expanded even further that decade and virtually every decent team ever since has had at least one full back who has been the source of many attacks or creating goals ever since (e.g. Stevens, Hinchcliffe, Baines for us) so it's been seen as an excellent source of creating chances, so hardly a 'new' thing.
