…partnerships in those wide positions is so important & something we still lack.

Remember Pienaar/Baines, Steven/Stevens, PvdH/Sheedy. Players on the same wavelength rather than players working for themselves. I was hoping that would emerge with whoever sat in front of Patterson but it hasn’t yet materialised.

Posters point to CM for lack of creativity but our great sides had Reid/Bracewell, Kendall/Harvey who were not creators/scorers. It’s the wide positions where so much creativity and goal contribution can come from & include FBs in that equation.
Not the relevant thread but I have high hopes in how Garner and Patterson might play together. Gilmour seems to click with Patterson when they both play for Scotland. Garner and Patterson could do similar.

Of course mate, Wilson and Wright...but i mentioned 1970 to include the Newton 'stat' and greater emphasis on Cooper/Newton (and Tommy Wright vs Brazil too) than previously- even though it did happen as you say. That's the thing, when teams like Newcastle last night allow you to have the ball in the 2nd half, that's when reinforcements become so valuable (e.g. full backs joining the attack to stretch the opposition more) but it just didn't happen.
I agree with you 100% mate. My belief is that if you play with out and out wingers you can stifle the forward runs of the full backs if the wingers aren't prepared to come inside at the right time for the full backs to bomb on. But I'm not a coach so I'll stick to my day job ?

Maybe the natural sympathy for his unfortunate national tragedy is washing off and his footballing skills or shortcomings have come into focus. I am not sure if he has what it takes.

I don’t think anyone would disagree that Frank has made us more solid and harder to beat. The issue is that he hasn’t made us good enough that we aren’t getting beaten. I never imagined that any manager would change our fortunes in the space of one window, particularly when we had no money to spend. I had hoped that we wouldn’t be in a relegation battle again this year, at the moment I don’t think we will be but this is more to do with there being some very poor teams in the league than it does with us being good. Hopefully we can get a tune out of some of our forward line or get in someone who can score in the next window.

He has been very good as a defender tbh. If our wide men weren’t such crap his shortcomings going forward wouldn’t be such an issue but we are where we are.

No coincidence that our worst spell attacking has come with Patterson out.

…i recall saying at the time that it was a strange decision to send him on loan when we didn’t have adequate resources in that position.

Not many ‘get away’ but he could be one. Regardless, that ship has sailed.
He was going to Milan before he had that heart issue. frightening.

He was always a bit dicey as a defender for USA, kind of the anti- Myko. I haven’t seen much of the side in the past year though.

Why would that be when Patterson doesn't get forward either?

It' a fallacy that he does. Anyone observing the few games he's played for Everton could not come away with the impression he attacks like Baines/Digne or Coleman of a few seasons ago.

I think the two things play into each other though. I think our wide men are often seen as crap precisely because they have two slugs behind them who can NEVER overlap and create space.
