Walter Smith

Weir, Stubbs, Campbell and Carsley were good buys. Pembridge and Gemmil were not too bad for the little money involved.

Didn't he buy Nyarko, Alexandersson, Linderoth and Bakayoko though? None of them were on the really cheap side.

Get well soon Walter.

Smith bought well really. Yes a few poor ones, but on the whole his record was decent. The problem was, we had to keep selling.

Gough, Pembridge, Steve Watson, Gravesen, Dacourt, Materazzi, Xavier all did really well as well.

Was Materazzi really a good buy for us? I feel there's a bit of hindsight from people there. 3 red cards in 27 games and flogged back to the club we bought him from (Perugia)

Obviously he proved himself to be class, but not sure he can be considered a good signing for US.

He was terrible for us. But a good player, Walter clearly had a decent enough eye.

I'm not sure he was the best coach, and was a bit too cautious, but always felt he could spot a player.

Yeah, a bit like Moyes he seemed to get the steady eddie signings right, but struggled with some of the bigger deals.

Pistone, Alexanderrson, Bakayoko, Linderoth and Nyarko cost more than Weir, Carsley, Gravesen, Watson, Pembridge, Gough and Xavier combined, and I think we all know which was the better group of players.

Yes definitely true that. Nyarko was a big failure, pretty sure he was brought in to replace Hutchison and it went disastrously. But he got a lot of good value buys.

That side lacked pace. That was the other problem he had. Bought well in terms of defence on midfield, but not really attacking players. Also tend to buy older players, so most were not massively saleable assets.

Did sign Radzinski but never got the best from him.

If hed have been given money to spend, and not had to continually sell players, a bit like at Rangers, I reckon we would have got to the top 6 under him.

well wishes to him

he was before my time, but i've heard that he's generally considered one of our worst managers, how true is that?

Met Walter at one of those fan lunches with the squad....absolute gentleman, as were Goughie and Pembo. Super Kev was just quality personified and went out of his way to engage....the two least interested were both ex-Rangers players who just sat sniggering between themselves and ignoring everyone else.
Wishing Walter a speedy recovery.

I dont think he was, Marco Silva miles worse, and Koeman IMO, he took over a total mess when only goal differance the season before had kept us up. Thing is his stock in world football was high, we were as un attractive as it gets, current Newcastle levels, to get him was lucky at the time as know one with any Premier League experience would of touched us.
See the thing is because we all love Howard so much, the season before Smith came, known as HK3, is naturally air brushed out.

From things I've heard out of Don Hutchison's mouth, the guy sounded like a real prick.
Yeah im sure he grew a persona in the old firm bubble, a siege mentality where he thought of himself as a top manager that took no sh1t.. outside of the two horse race he had flaws like everyone else and was probably a run of the mill average manager, but most managers ive heard talk of Walter have spoken well, even those on the other side of the dirty coin up here.

Be did a bit, but it seemed interesting that Hutchison seemed to have some admiration for him.

He also seemed like a really hard and scary fella, which I'll be honest wasnt entirely how I pigeonholed him.

Really warmed to Hutchison though.
