Walter Smith

Walter was shafted by Johnson, could definitely have had us competing if backed, returned the favour on Johnson by calling out his disgraceful subterfuge with Duncan, and then slowly found himself out of his depth with the money tap off. By the end, he was, unquestionably, the worst manager of Everton, with the only exception being Mike Walker, in my time as a supporter (since 1980).

He was allowed to linger by Kenwright for a good 18 months longer than he should have been - and that was Kenwright's fault. Smith was an honourable, decent man, but he was sold well short during his tenure and it effectively killed his career.

Recover soon Walter. He was manager for the 2 seasons I had a season ticket. We weren’t great, but we sold our best player! Graveson was a hero at the time, the best signing by Smith. I was gutted when we sold him. That shows how well Walter was backed. I’m was angry that he sold Ball to Rangers, but looking back, that is the way we operated then. And Ball didn’t go onto that much in the end. Gemill and Pembridge in midfield and the crowd chanting ‘stand up if you hate Mark Hughes!’ Under £300 for the season ticket, what a time! Get well soon Walter

The greatest compliment that can be given to him is that his 4 centre backs tactic has now been copied by Ancelotti.

Walter is a good man, who did his best for Everton, and he helped keep us above water during a very turbulent period for the club. The football was dire at times for sure, not to mention his obsession with veteran players. But i think he was very unfortunate to become manger, during a period where the club was an absolute mess, and the board selling our best players, to stop the roof from caving in! So i have a lot of time for the man to be honest. It was Walter who told Bill to hire David Moyes. That say's it all about the man, he's just been fired, and he still cared about Evertons welfare. Get well soon Walter.;)
