Was it all that bad? Top 5 changes worth retaining from Roberto's years

1/ best ever PL season

2/ reintroduced the quaint notion of passing the ball to team mates that the School of Science was noted for

3/ *got* the club and its history - as the late great Howard Kendall found out

4/ increased the value of the squad with astute signings and bringing through of talent already here

5/ oversaw the reorganisation of the playing side of the whole club from top to bottom in his time here

He raised the bar initially after years of "Finish tenth and be grateful" from the Moyesiah and that aspect I would like to keep,NSNO and all that:)

Are we rewriting history?

In Moyes 11 years in charge we finished in the top 7 in all but 3 seasons (one finishing 8th with the same number of points as when we finished 4th)

Moyes used to say the initial target was 40 points then get 60.

Roberto used to say the target was to win titles then got less than 50 points with a vastly more expensive squad.

Moyes ALWAYS talked the club down.

and Martinez always talked the club up, Koeman seems to be a decent balance.
Nothing wrong with talking the club up. I want Koeman to be doing that too. My hunch is that Koeman will throw players under the bus. I dont like that trait, not because it's dishonest but usually it's players marginalised in the squad who managers pick on rather than those with status who's standards have dropped..

Could someone present me any evidence of Roberto introducing a "style of football" from first team right down the age structures?

It gets repeated often enough but it simply isn't true.

Everton had a long established footballer development pathway (or whatever buzzwords you want to use) they've developed over many years with a huge network of staff who specialise in various aspects of youth development.

The idea that Roberto turned up with his zero experience in youth development and overhauled one of the most productive systems in England is laughable.

Phenomenal;)lolIn all seriousness, the last two seasons have been a disgrace, however the first year admittedly with Moyes side, when he threw the shackles off them, they gave me more pleasure than in Moyes' eleven years.

Have a word with David Unsworth and Bill Kenwright.

Moyes ALWAYS talked the club down.

Yeah he once said "knife to a gunfight" when asked about how he felt about Manchester City spending £300m compared to him signing one player on a free. He should have said "F8ck them, we are Everton" and lost 7-0.

It was always the case that Moyes played Everton's standing down. "The club hasn't been a top club for years" type commentary throughout his time here. And his treatment of Everton shortly after he left underlined just how much he valued this club.

Don't have much respect for him to be honest as I felt he didn't understand Everton good is on and it's supporters. Did well first 6 months. After that was a disaster (leaving out cup runs this year). For me it was his treatment of Everton fans that was woeful trying to fill us with utter nonsense for last 2 years. As a long time Everton supporter he was trying to tell me that playing at home with a lack of intensity was the best way to get results. His stubbornness in playing players who were totally rubbish and out of form and trying to convince us that they were world class. Mentioning kone in the same bracket as Drogba. Cleverly as one of the best signings in premiership history and Barry as one of the greatest English players ever . It was insane. I couldn't understand how he was getting away with it for so long. Probably the cup run kept him in the job. For me his first 6 months were good and a nice change from DM brand of football. Being able to coax rom to stay last summer and del boy to return. It ended there. Actually dropped in to a bar for a pint to celebrate the moment I found out he was sacked. To the future.

Roberto's top 5 changes

  1. Changed us from top half regulars to bottom half regulars
  2. Changed Goodison from a 'tough place to go' to a place where teams left dissapointed with anything less than a win.
  3. Changed our strike rate with transfers from 8/10 successful ones to 1 in 3 (at best) See Alacaraz, McGeady, Niasse and a few others.
  4. Made Evertonians have to get used to our manager being the 'Butt of the Joke'
  5. Changed the fitness levels of our squad and clearly not for the better.
