Was it all that bad? Top 5 changes worth retaining from Roberto's years

Martinez s biggest fault was ironically something that we were desperate for is the Moyes years. he prioritised cups over league performance. had we the same league finishes but even won but one pot, he'd be lionised. there'd be talk of naming a stand after him. we are so starved for trophies that it was not a bad strategy - we asked for it ffs! unfortunately we came close but weren't able to pull it off, so this is the send off he gets.

Lads? Put it to bed please. Please! Let's look to the future. As much as I admire the two of you for your astute reading of the game, I imagine I'm not alone in not wanting @davek and @ianefc arguing over Roberto Martinez for another season. Last season was terrible on the field and in this forum. We seriously had a number of folk perma-banned. Agree to disagree and put this all to bed. Turn your energies to arguing about Koeman. Personally, think we should lock this thread.

Embraced the idea we are Everton and to be proud of our history (also bringing back Howard) shame he wasn't the man to do it because we all very much wanted him to do so.

Martinez at is the typical demise of the premiership manager. First season honeymoon with a few tricks and reaping the previous managers work. Second season the new manager's ideas are in full swing and it's make or break. The Europa league season two in my opinion covered his weakness as a manager and it was all to see and no excuses in season three.

There was a period during Martinez's first season when I thought we were on the brink of something special. We won at Old Trafford and then drew away at Arsenal who were top of the league at the time and we were unlucky not to win in the end. Had plenty of chances.
Ultimately the last couple of seasons and the refusal to adapt his style cost him, I genuinely think we would have been next seasons Villa had he remained in charge.

The idea that we did well against top teams under Martinez is another myth. We drew away at Arsenal in Moyes' last season and on at least one other occasion under him. I don't think we had a single win V Man City (other than one leg of the League Cup semi-final) under RM while under Moyes we nearly always beat them. We did have a few wins V Man U (as we did under DM) but they weren't the force they were under Sir Alex. For obvious reasons I won't mention derbies; also, I don't think we won a single game against a side in the top half last season.

Under Martinez, we would have a few good results every season but these were islands in a sea of mediocrity. I admit that during his first season I thought at times he might be on the right road, but in the end, even then, we blew up once the pressure was on, as we've been doing for many years.

He came over as a decent human being, I'll give him that.

In 11 seasons. Woo hoo Moyesie.

He is responsible for taking us back years and for the complete mess that Koeman is being tasked with sorting out. His superficial charm deluded many Evertonians whilst the likes of Stoke, West Ham and the RS were laughing at us and our abundantly clear regression into a poor bottom half side. He is without doubt the worst manager that Everton Football Club have ever employed. What type of manager totally neglects training for set pieces? What type of manager neglects fitness in the way Martinez did?

Be thankful for Moshiri's intervention, as our reality would be completely different right now if he had not come to the club! Martinez would still have been sacked, but I dread to think who we would have got in to try and sort out the mess left behind by Martinez? It wouldn't have been someone as competent as Koeman, and we would be dealing with one hell of a struggle to compete!

I can't believe some people have used the word pride and Martinez in the same sentence! It was Moyes who gave us our pride back after over a decade of dross and worry of relegation battles, which he made a thing of the past. Say what you will of Moyes but at no point did I ever dred going to the match as much as these last two years. Pride?! Martinez made us a laughing stock! I sure as hell didn't feel pride when we got ripped apart by the S##e or Sunderland. Or wasted results like Chelsea or Bournemouth. Or when we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory like Stoke or West Ham?!
Five good thing about Martinez?
1) Lukaku
2) Barry
3) Gerry
4) May we never forget the Holy Grail of 72 points!
5) The fact that the incompetent shambles of a manager was found out for the fraud he was before it was to late and he got us relegated.

I started this thread to kill time in May when nothing was happening... returned to it to make a joke earlier today. Didn't mean it to kickstart again

In an ideal world. Martinez would have been employed by the club as an embassador before manager.

The man uses class as a person, he gave the place a huge uplift and fans positivity, for which I'll always respect.

His managagerial ability, however, was appalling, and our "fortress" was lost and our sense of attacking also went.

Forza Koeman.

I can't really take any positives from the Martinez reign - we're now seeing the after effects of the mess he made. Two top players wanting out, squad still struggling for fitness. He should have been sacked during the 14/15 season. Shame on Kenwright for letting it drag on for so long.
