"Watch Classic Matches Again"

Interesting episode of Granada's "kick off" which covers Everton's sacking of Billy Bingham, including interviews with Harry Catterick and Johnny Carey. Includes both goals that knocked Stoke out of the FA Cup in Bingham's last game. I was very young at the time (only went to my first ever game a few weeks before that!)so didn't really understand what was happening at the time, but thought it might be an interesting watch for Evertonians who remember this. As an aside,Billy Ashcroft, the Wrexham striker(also played for Middlesbrough as well) also interviewed on this programme about Wrexham's exploits, happens to be a big Blue as well!

Brilliant watching that ,loved kick off remember the sacking of Bingham well but cannot remember who were the front runners for the job at the time Bobby Robson or Clough and was Gordon Lee a surprise at the time

I remember reading somewhere a few years back that Bobby Robson had agreed in principle to become manager, but asked the club to keep it quiet until he'd spoken to his chairman at Ipswich? Apparently though, the papers the next day had back page headlines about him joining Everton, presumably leaked by somebody at the club and I suppose he felt betrayed by this and decided to stay with Ipswich where to be fair he was building a really good team. I was only 7 pushing on 8 at the time so wouldn't have taken any interest in those kind of headlines in the press, but I do remember being at the Stoke game- it was my second ever match!

Not Mrs Butlers eldests finest night that ;) lol
That was the night we sent Sunderland down after Coventry kicked off late due to alleged roadworks.
Our game had finished and Jimmy Hill told the Coventry players to see out the 2-2 draw with Bristol City which meant both teams stayed up.
A complete fix to send Sunderland down.
Tony Kay got a lifetime ban for less
