"Watch Classic Matches Again"

Having got lucky there with the Inchy equaliser in 84 and seen us blowing for tugs against Forest on the preceding Saturday I have to admit I feared the worst. Listening to the radio was torture.
Yes the old days when news flashes of the blues game were first introduced on Radio Merseyside - then Radio City when they staed their was goal news in an away game you were on pins!

Big Bob!!

What impressed me about that footage was the capabilities of Mick Lyons two lovely passes from an all round player, who was imo, an Everton great - also George Telfer who took his goals well in a very good Keeper in Shilton - Fond memories of Telfer as he lived by my girlfriend/ now wife in Huyton /Roby who always told me about this young boy who never had a football out of his hands since the age of 5 and often played in the roads nearby - never quite made it to be a star , but had a reasonable footballing career, Goodlasses cross for the Latchford goal was sublime, to think we always had two good wingers with Gordon Lee!

I was at Sunderland away when Telfer was nearly killed by a full body check by a thug called Joe Boulton iirc. Telfer had been turning his promise into form but was never the same again imo. I was in with Sunderland friends, October 76 I think. Goodlass scored from a corner. The guy ran from left back to take him out in the right back/left wing part of the pitch right in front of me. Poor George.
Imo Mick Lyons was an excellent player but just lacked that extra bit of skill and killer instinct to go up one more level. He could Defoe play though. Heart of a lion and bled blue blood.

I remember there used to be a reporter on Radio Merseyside in the 70s (can't remember his name). When they used to announce there's been a goal in Everton's game, you'd be on tenterhooks, they'd then get him on air fron the match and he'd say, "Ohhhh, TRAGEDY for Everton." My heart would sink. He said it every time we conceded a goal. The tragic bell really used to get on my nerves! Anyone else remember him?
