"Watch Classic Matches Again"

They ended up being the greatest blues side I had ever seen footballing wise!
That performance with a young Joe Royle was the sign of things to come!

Was that Royles home debut Joey as I know he made his first start against Blackpool away didn't he?

Young is the one I've wanted to see so much off. Always fascinated by his story of losing vision in one of his eyes that he pretty much kept a secret for as long as possible. Just watching that particular game and the way the players interchange position, a lot more than I ever thought a team would back in the day. Royle looks the focal point but then you have Young, Ball and Morrissey coming in and everywhere with Harvey breaking and Kendal sitting, Wilson and Wright so far forward, a lot like our modern day fullbacks.

I thought it would be a rigid 4-4-2 but there's Young just before halftime snapping Best at left back earning a goal kick.

Oh and if anyone thinks Cruyff came up with that back heeled cross in the 70's, check out video 1 and Alan Ball does it in the warm up ;)

Believe it or not just looked in my EFC bible Joe Royle wore the no 8 shirt in that infamous debut away v Blackpool 1965 his debut at home was at home v Chelsea Wednesday April the 19th 1967 where he scored two and Hurst the other in a 3 -1 win again he wore the no 8 shirt ironically he had scored the game before away at Blackpool in a 1-0 win.
He had played six games from 1965-1967 scoring three times only once did he wear the no 9 shirt in that period!
1968 he made the no 9 shirt his!
As for the game you have watched v UNT when we destroyed them above we came 5 th that year, Alex Young on his day was an artist untypical in those days of a no 9 he glided across the turf, he could out jump centre halfs by hanging in the air what a footballer he was on his day - Alan Ball is the best complete footballer you could ever watch Mr perpetual motion with skill never liked losing - best player in blue I have ever seen!

Joey , Joe Royle made his debut as you say at Blackpool it was 15th January 1966.
Alan Ball at the time was still playing for Blackpool and ripped us to bits even sitting on the ball during the game if my memory serves me.
Final whistle and there was the usual pitch invasion with yours truly amongst others pleading with Bally. Sign for us Alan, not Leeds, which he duly did in August 1966.

Yes in Ballys autobiography he stated of the bungs cash in envelopes Don Revie sent to his house, his dad looked at Everton as a footballing tradition , and the fact the Golden Vision was a bit of an hero of Bally he chose us thankfully, that Blackpool game they won 2-0 in the 1965/66 season. Royle reckoned the game just passed him by the famous jostling of HC after the game as he went to get on the coach after the had dropped the Golden Vision for a young lad who became a great no blues no 9!
I seen Young , and bally play in the same team Alex wore the no 7 shirt it was a joy to watch they were best mates, but them two togeter as Alex was nearing the end of his career was a treat to see!

It's been so long since I think any of us could really speak of an Everton player so highly. The type where when you talk of them it's in a romantic football way.

I think the last one we had was Cahill, not the most gifted of footballers by any stretch but certainly one who 99%of fans always mention who had heart, desire and a knack for putting one in against the RS.

I would say we would have to go back to the 80's to find the next batch. We've had good players, even a great player like Kanchelskis whose time was too short. But in 40 years time we will all still be talking about the likes of Ball, Young, Royle, Sharp, Southall and so on.

Let's hope that we have a few more to come, real legends who we can speak of in 10-15 years time who have won us trophies.

The only problem is if we had a young blues players who made the grade would we be able to keep them that long - even in the days of Alan Ball the Catt said he would only sell him for a million { a massive fee in those days!} then sold him for a paltry £220, 000 to Arsenal when the player never wanted to leave!
What would be the value of Ball Harvey , and Kendall today ? and would we keep them as we have had such a fight holding onto one promising player?

God only knows Joey, imagine if someone came in for the three of them at once,we could afford a new ground then eh?:)

Any win is a great win against "them" especially as it prevented that lot banging on about the record they were about to achieve,"Record"?not on our manor, thank you Wayne Clarke!!lol
