Agree with you. I have respect for United. OK they are a franchise brand now but they have produced great players and fine teams.

What irks is the whole hoo ha that has surrounded them. George Best was a lovely player, elegant and graceful but in trawling through youtube vids I have found precious few of these dribbling runs that beat 5 players we hear so much of but see so few of. More often than not beats a man before pushing the ball too far and losing it. How many cup finals of any type did he play in? One. We are told he scored all his goals from the wing....no he did not. All the post 1967 vids show he played as a free ranging centre forward whatever number he wore. Everton, Liverpool, City and especially Leeds had comparable teams with comparable players.

Imagine an injury free Eddie Gray playing for a media favourite? Imagine Alex Young?

Not knocking United or Best. He was lovely talent. Just looking for some balance behind all the guff and blather and sentiment.
Well I guess my late father would disagree with you. Alan ball was the best Everton player he ever saw, and best was the best none everton player he saw. He said as has been mentioned in this thread, we used to double up on him in the late 60s to try and nullify his threat. Great balance, good in the air for his size, great acceleration and was brave my dad said. Oh how he wished him and ball had played in the same team. My dad said ball was the heartbeat of the team, a superb player who had everything and led by example. I guess football is all about opinions and maybe playing for United (media darlings) gave best more exposure but no one can deny the lads talent.

Oh for a time machine. What must have Goodison sounded and smelt like during that Edwardian era, and then during Dixie's time? One of the Newcastle players in one of those clips looked like a proper hard case, too.

Great those. Noticed a kid, no older than about ten lighting up. Total absence of scarves, wonder when they came in ? The ref, in plus fours, looked liked he'd just come from his Club for a brisk stroll. Also noticed what looked like a brass band. :)

I think the brass bands remained at a few grounds up til the late 1960s,there's one in the Golden Vision documentary at Highbury for our game there iirc.
