Watches

Oh, watch disease...why do you make me lust in such a dirty manner. If this was an ex's Facebook page I'd be accused of hardcore creeping and handed a restraining order.

These retailers below are excellent. I've purchased a few watches from them, including a Casio Oceanus (what a great travel watch) and a Seiko Cocktail time. They sell the arita porcelin dial and a bunch of wicked cool and expensive Grand Seikos. Their shipping and prices are quite good.

My son has a Cartier watch and it needs a new crystal glass and a new crown for which the jeweller has quoted £170 and £80 respectively, the thing is they won’t do this work on its own as this effects the functioning of the watch and have quoted £485 for a service which they say is necessary, so that’s a total of £735. It’s 10 years old and cost about £3000 at that time, what do people think

What's included in the full service? A quick google of that work gave me glass from £70 and a full service at £290. I suspect that you should try shopping around. I have no idea what the service schedule is for a Cartier but 10 years seems not unreasonable (Google again - says every 5 years so a service is probably a good thing). Other experts no doubt will chime in.

Yeah, I ran in to that site about a year or so ago when I was looking around for the Seiko I have now but it was just around when COVID hit so wasn't an option at the time. Dangerous site, full of the lusty JDM only things...good to hear you've ordered from them a couple times...I'm always wary of ordering anything internationally that has some value, for obvious reasons.

No idea what’s included (sons watch) He went back to the shop he bought it from and that’s there quote ( Goldsmiths) Would that be normal refusing to do the optional work ( glass and crown) unless you got the necessary work done?. Thanks for the input by the way

In general, servicing costs of an automatic/mechanical Cartier watch (this would include disassembly, oiling, cleaning parts, and then readjusting the watch for better time keeping) as well as replacing the crystal and crown would be pretty expensive. But as others have said, I would shop around. I would also contact an authorized Cartier servicing/watch repair. They should be able to give you an estimate, but it will likely be pretty high. Or, it's possible to find a jeweler who can just replace the crystal and crown and not do the rest of the servicing.

Scroll down to the bottom of this page below; they don't have the price of servicing a Cartier, but it will give you an idea of how expensive "servicing"-- cleaning, disassembling, polishing, adjusting, oiling, etc. can be: (and this isn't repairs, just regular maintenance).

[edit: the cynic in me says certainly the jewelers are trying to get a bit more money by including servicing costs along with the repairs, but on the other hand, to do those repairs would require a lot of disassembly and it wouldn't make much sense to go through that process without giving the watch some basic servicing, akin to replacing the windshield and gear shift on your old car, but not doing an oil change, spark plug change, air filter change, etc. So, in my opinion if the watch is of value to your son, either for sentimental reasons (a future heirloom) or otherwise, I would just go ahead with the servicing]

Most watches need to have some sentimental attachment to be worthwhile overhauling. I've got a Seiko chrono that refurbishing would cost probably all if not more than its market value.
