Watches

Any of you lads into pocket watches?

They're definitely dated, and unless you're donning a bespoke 3 piece suit, say maybe one that's 250 virgin wool thread count, single breasted notch lapel (not peaked lapel, because ewwwww), silk tie with matching pocket square, and cuff lings with a collar bar/pin that matches your pocket watch everyday, strolling down the street with a stylish walking stick like a proper dandy going: 'I'm having a bully day! Are you having a bully day? Tally-ho!' then there's no need to own one!
:p:p:p

I quite like pocket watches though I don’t own any. Some of my favorites are from the area I grew up in (Chicago) but from the early 1900s. Companies like Elgin Watch Co and Illinois Watch Co. Hamilton Watch co (from Lancaster PA) also made exceptional pocket watches. A watchmaker, Roland Murphy, in PA occasionally repurposes old Hamilton pocket watch movements into wrist watches.

Wow! That is very nice, and more appropriate as a wrist watch.

You have to be a true horologist if you're going to collect pocket watches. And if you're not too self-conscience, you can wear them out in public. When I wore mine out, my mates had a bit of fun at my expense, and it earned me a reputation of being a little bit eccentric.
I only really own that one that I posted up there and I bought it because you can see right through it and watch how all the mechanisms work.

I take it that you're also a watch fan, and they fascinate you too?

Yes, I'm a huge watch fan/nerd. I love mechanical watches. The fact that you can machine a bunch of gears and springs in a small item such that it tells time, date, moonphase, chronograph, etc., is amazing to me!

Best £80 I've ever spent Bronze case, sapphire crystal, Seiko NH35 movement that hacks and hand winds, drilled lugs ( love a drilled lug) pity about the rubbish camera on my phone. lol

So been just over a month of wearing the seiko 5 and loving it. Set comfortable on the wrist, sometimes forget it’s there... become a big fan of the nato strap although I feel like the perfect fit is right between 2 holes I use.

but to the watch.. still find the watch interesting to wear and I often take off the strap to check how the movement is doing. Still intrigues me watching the automatic movement..

have to get used to the time having to be adjusted almost every week. Runs very fast which having always had quartz watches is a new concept.
Can’t say it has scratched my itch.. if anything it has made more interested in collecting a variety now...

You can probably have someone regulate/adjust your watch to slow it down. On the balance wheel is a +/- lever and you shift it clockwise to slow it down. You could pop into a jeweler to ask if they can do this and how much it costs--should be straightforward. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you know what you are doing (and there's a fair amount of trial and error about how far you need to move the lever).

As for me, resetting a mechanical watch every week isn't much of an issue, it just means I get to play around with my watch some more.

Yeah it’s no issue... maybe in a year from now it might get annoying but exactly as you say.. gives me an excuse to play around.. keep engaged with the watch and not a passive onlooker
