Watches

Rolex can be a minefield so many high quality clones kicking around and in essence Rolex retain ownership of the watch in the sense that when you give it to them for a service they decide which parts they will replace. You could own a beautiful 70s sub and it might come back to you with a new handset or in some rare cases even a new dial.
I've heard stories of this, but I've also heard that if you are specific in telling them what you want then they will respect that.
Their default is to make everything like new. They'll replace a spider dial (if they have a fresh one), unless you tell them not to.

Do we have any actual watch dealers/jewellers on here guys? not visited this thread before.

I have a nice 18k watch from a good brand that I bought many years ago from a pawnbrokers that I've not worn in ages, I'm not really well up on watches and don't do bling.

I've decided to sell as it just languishes in a drawer but struggling to get good honest advice as to whether the watch is worth more as a watch. or to just weigh it in for scrap value. I'd love trusted advice from a fellow blue. Many thanks guys. Watch is in perfect order.
Not a dealer, but I know some. Feel free to shoot me a message, though best bet is to see if similar watches are selling on ebay.

Very kind of you that will take you up on that I think, appreciated. Never seen one on Ebay as of yet. Saw one that was sold at a jewellers but they'd removed the asking price. That one had a leather strap rather than gold though. Again many thanks. Are the dealers local in the North West?

Anyone got good intel on where to source the best nato straps? I have had a few cheapos off ebay just to see what the watches look like on them but they obviously don't last very long as they eventually frey.

Paid a bit more for a couple from Sniper Bay but they look like they're going to go the same way as the cheapos now.

Sadly on a couple of watch forums I use, owners have specified what they'd like to keep and it's been ignored. And you have no legal recourse.

Surprisingly AliExpress versions are decent, probably most are made in China anyway.

That's a shame.
Luckily I have no vintage Rolex.
I get mine looked at by a local watchmaker the movement isn't that complex to work on and as I dumped the box and paperwork when I got it (who knew) having a service history isn't that important.

Have you checked Chrono24 etc for comparative pricing?

These are pretty good quality so I’d except the same of their NATOs.

If it isn't a premium brand and has a case smaller than 37mm it'll probably be for the melt.

My thoughts too really. It's a very slim Baume and Mercier dress watch with what I think was called a fluid gold strap.
Chrono24 would be good to check, as suggested. Also, the sale forums on watch sites might be of help. Watchuseek.com is a large forum with a "sales" subforum...so perhaps do a search in that forum to see if similar models have sold.

Many larger jewelers buy used watches. Here in the USA, both Govberg jewelers and Crown and Caliber will buy pre-owned watches. You could inquire with them...that said, I suspect there isn't much of a market for the watch you have; Baume & Mercier don't have that much collectibility (though I don't know the model and haven't seen the watch).
