Transfer Rumour Wayne Rooney

I was worried and not particularly excited about Rooney coming back, BUT 2 things have changed my mind.

1, if Koeman wants him. I support that.
2, Jan seems to have the players fitter than i've ever seen them. Ross was still chasing down balls near the end of the match. If he can get Rooney in shape like Ross, and the coaching team can get him playing well again (like Ross) then it's a big win for us.

If reports are true he's willing to half his current wage to come back then he clearly wants to be back and prove a point. I think we can get 2 good seasons out of him and with a WC next year he'll want to be in the England set up.
Get him fit, give him support (which United Fan's haven't for a long time) and we may see the best Wayne Rooney

I can guarantee you Everton would get more publicity here in the states if Rooney signed on again. If it just helps grow the global brand, it could be a decent bit of business. Over here, Everton are behind the likes of Newcastle in terms of popularity. The fact that he's a name people know gives Everton an instant boost in markets like ours.

How exactly?

If Tom Brady joined the Minnesota Vikings I doubt you would get a load of UK based NFL fans changing allegiance from the teams they support.

Understood, but if we want to progress we have to start attracting big names and initially pay over the going rate until we have got new success

We don't need to start attracting big name players. We need to start attracting good footballers who can contribute. If we can get both at the same time then great but we need to be careful not to just sign someone because of their name.

Rooney is a big name player who would still contribute.

Which is why Koeman is very keen on getting a deal done if it's a possibility.

If the price isn't right etc then it won't happen and there'll be no harm done.

We hope he can. There is no guarantee of that (same with any player to be fair...) his recent record isn't exactly sparkling.

Managers can be wrong. It happens. (It wont turn him into a rubbish manager either)

Signing Rooney would be win commercially and as a sign of intent. The fact is, we probably need to do things like this because we haven't won anything since 1995. We need to start disrupting, and throwing our weight around again. If this means we get a few more column inches, more foreign interest, shirt sales and peaks the interest of other potential new signings, then it'll be worth it.

We don't need to show commercial signs of intent, we've got a billionaire owner and a Russian gangster. That's the only reason Rooney is showing interest.

It's not the fee that's the issue, it's the wages.

If it's two years on no more than £150k a week, and it isn't a replacement for Lukaku, then I'm not that worried about it happening.
But you said Lukaku is crap anyway so what does it matter?

Agree entirely.

But, I think it'd be worth the 'risk' at the right price, as long as it's mixed with a) other quality additions and b) maintaining the current squad.

And signing Rooney, who only teams from China want, disrupts who exactly? West Ham? Our wage structure?

My point is that managers get things right and get things wrong. Saying Mourinho is a poor judge of a player is a bit of a weird argument considering his eight league titles, seven domestic cup wins, a Uefa cup and two champions league wins. He has let some good players go in the past though so Rooney will definitely be boss.

Oh absolutely.

I think it's more that just cos Rooney hasn't got a place at United doesn't mean he's not very good.

Nobody outside England cares about Wayne Rooney, except Man U fans. Are these people going to swap to Everton because of Rooney? For sure not. The Man U fans abroad may check on Everton results to see how he is doing, but they won't be buying jersey or other Everton products.

The real way to get interest from outside England to Everton would be by getting some exciting younger players but most important to win some trophies and compete in Europe.

My team Dinamo Zagreb have sold some excellent players, but do I go support the team they go to? Of course not. I check to see if they are doing good, but I definitely do not buy their jersey.

Anyway, this support from around the world is not so important, it takes time and much success to build. The least of our concerns. Tottenham have been in Europe, have some great players and still they're not too big outside of England (even London). This is because they don't win anything.
