He needs to have an influence on the pitch before he can have one off it. He can organise the team and get them playing but we don't see enough of it. He comes across well and a has a good footballing brain but when his time comes to manage at the top level we might already be under somebody else who is doing well so Rooney could be one of the only players to win everything off the pitch as well as on it.

What I find absolutely mental about that anecdote is the majority of players who obviously don't ask these things. Imagine playing at that level, putting in all those hours, and not being curious about the tactical side of the game.

Yep and that probably covers about 99% of footballers.
