We need to talk about England fans.

Should England be banned from a tournament or two?

This isn't just about football. This is an orchestrated drift over to the right and far right wing across the country. In my view it has been fired by the right wing press and media, which lets face it, is pretty much all the press and media in the uk.

The solution lies with finding and treating the cause, not just the symptoms one of which is the absolutely brainless idiots who show it at England football.

Cause? I'd say its the quickly growing inequality between the rich and poor. Some if the rich own the media, so they will use race, gender, religion etc as excuses for this inequality and divide the people one against the other. This hides the reality of a firmly cemented class system that benefits too few.

The whole reason why i don't follow England, born and bred here and the last time i backed England to win was probably 2006, after that i got fed up of the media overhype machine before every tournament and the drunken neanderthal mobs who travel abroad and also as someone who is of African descent and mixed race the ignorance of the FA's slowness to incorperate BAME community into coaching into this country, i absolute despise the FA for this reason and probably the biggest reason don't back England, a country that has produced so many black footballers and i can count on one hand a black english former player who's been a manager in the top 2 leagues in my lifetime.

I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat when Italy won, that didn't last long realising that the 3 players who missed the penalties would soon be getting vile racist abuse on social media.

I hope England get embarrassed in Qatar.

There’s a discussion going on in the Euro Knockout thread but that will close and this is a wider, long standing issue.

During this tournament we’ve witnessed their own players being booed for taking a knee, others national anthems roundly booed, ticket gates being stormed, scores of anti social behaviour committed in this own home city and so much racial abuse handed to their own and others.

As their detractors will point off this is not one off, it’s a continual theme and wider scale than pretty much anyone else so whataboutism simply doesn’t work. As it’s consistent, widespread and seemingly embarrassing to other England fans we can only assume the decent fans must be in the minority and unable to look after their own.

Measures need to be taken to change the direction and send a clear message this behaviour will not be tolerated again. Perhaps a ban from a tournament or two may give people some thinking time and encourage other fans to finally own the problem.

A simple combination of too much alcohol, and too few grey cells I am afraid.

As an outsider, it is truly frustrating to watch the right wing racist and violent culture of English hooliganism stained this team. The actual team is a positive representation of how 21st century England (and all multicultural western societies) should be. You have courageous young celebrities who have led positive collective action, and you have a manager and team leaders who support inclusivity and celebrate diversity.

I think an empty stadium decree might be the answer in short term. But I agree with others that this is a much larger societal issue, one we're also dealing with other here in the States. White supremacy and the paternalistic state are feeling very threatened these days, and they are fighting with all they have left. They will lose in the long term, demographics and education are winning, however its going to be tumultuous next decade or two as the (generally) older racists and misogynists cling on with they all they have.
