nice....does it sound much different? I've got a 1977 Germany LP issue...sounds excellent, prefer it to the CD as the synths kick upfront more.

Recently got a half-decent starter turntable off a mate who's badly got the bug and is in the process of upgrading to higher end gear. As such I've been going through and cleaning my old collection and coincidentally enough there's a 1977 Greek pressing of 'Animals' in there. Not got round to it yet as there's a queue of stuff I'm checking, cleaning and listening to.

Nipped out this morning and picked up a couple cheap - 'Flaunt The Imperfection' by China Crisis & 'Urban Beaches' by Cactus World News.

1977 presses, even from Greece, should sound ace as long as condition is ok.

oh yes it's a very addictive bug...i try to buy cheap so tend to go for non-mint conditions and non-UK presses, they still mostly sound great, especially after a clean. My Discogs order history this year - less than €400 in total so decent value, and i offset by selling off a few so her indoors stays cool with it lol

No, it’s a hi-fi and music forum I’m a member of. I’ve never much liked Pink Floyd but I spotted that thread this morning when I was catching up on the folk/acoustic chat.

I haven't compared it a lot, but I think it sounds sharper/clearer than the 2011 remaster at least. The drums sound completely different (and louder in the mix). It's on spotify if you want to check it out. I'm not really sure which edition I enjoy the most yet.

I'm more than happy with VG+. Looking through my old stuff I've found a near mint copy of Spanish Dance Troupe by Gorkys Zygotic Mynci back from my indie buying days. That's knocking around the £60-£100 mark *sold* on eBay.

No hesitation getting that flogged and picking up 10-15 very decent LPs that I'm actually going to listen to for that kind of money.

Thanks, Spotify will give us an idea tho' it'll only be a compressed 128kbps digital stream, i'm curious how the vinyl version compares to 1977 presses (analog signal path).

In my experience, modern remasters even on vinyl sound like a wall-of-sound: compressed, loud and a little ear-fatiguing. The infamous Loudness Wars being the main culprit. This has become such a known issue that i'm hoping the last few years of Remasters they've gotten back to prioritising dynamics (which gives each instrument its own space to breathe). These will be on average quieter, but that's what the volume knob is for. In original 1977 presses, the focus on dynamic range gives individual elements like synths and vocals extra upfrontness, which CD versions don't offer despite technically being capable of more dynamic range.

The other issue with modern Remasters on vinyl is that they often remaster from a digital source, not the original analog tapes. The loss of the analog-path may hamper attempts to separate the instruments from each other, tho' this can be very subjective and may just be a purist take.

According to Discogs user reviews, the 2018 'Remix' version does sound really good, with plenty of that crucial instrument-separation...but also many complaints of pops/crackles despite new-condition. Even some complaints of warping (unusual for 180g LP's).

I've got a small handful of modern remastered 180g vinyl (Sonic Youth, Neu, Godspeed YBE) and i don't think they sound that great. So i prefer to look for presses as close to the original year of production. My ears hear more instrument-upfrontness in the vintage pressings.

A lot of this is subjective, tho'. Discogs user reviews, and the Steve Hoffmann forums, are full of such discussion.
