I'm actually kind of glad, for once, that I've not read the books.

Simply because, as much as I love reading, I love a good TV show more. And getting to experience these plot points for the first time on the nice big tele, with a fine cast of actors and some fantastic scenery, is actually more appealing to me than my own imagination and interpretation of a book!

And having read them I really kind of wish I could come to the story fresh so I was surprised by the twists and turns you will be. It's an enviable position.

The books, believe it or not are even better and that is no slight on the series, they really are that good. The series does a great job of portraying the overall feel of the story, the action and the characters but the books go into that in so much more detail that it is even more of a joy.

I think I probably will read the books at some point to be honest. But I'll try and only read material that's been covered in the TV show, so as to not spoil the surprises.

I really want to read the books given that the show is so great.

Started to read the books after 5th episode because I didn't want to wait a week to see what happened next. Read Game of Thrones and Clash of Kings in 2 weeks, and started Storm of Swords last night. Story just keeps getting better. Never thought it would hook me like this, but it has. Also it helps I am a captive audience with a torn ACL and rupture meniscus. It never is predictable, and just keeps getting better. Just hope HBO keeps making the shows.

Then so far you can safely read the first one!

I had read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy before I saw the movies, and I still thoroughly enjoyed them. Took the same approach to this as well. The books just enrich the enjoyment of the show for me so far. Just gonna hate waiting on the next run of shows.

That's my fear (and main criticism of American TV). If ratings drop at all or interest wanes it might never reach a conclusion. Hopefully, the groundwork is done now though.

Yeah me too, on the one hand I love that I know the characters already but on the other I kind of lament that I am not coming to them with the surprise of a new viewer.

Scares the hell out of me as well. The average American has the attention span of 15 seconds and would never be able to engage for the time necessary to ingest and enjoy the depth of the show. I do hope they are going to continue the show. Loving it.

Update: According to wikipedia: The series was picked up for a second season on April 19, 2011, two days after its premiere.

True that. It is a risk/reward deal that is totally up to the individual. Just depends on how you approach and ingest things.
