Ok, I'll put what happened in the last episode I saw below this in white text! Which was apparently the 4th episode, not the third.
Some fat guy joined the night's watch and Jon Snow took him under his wing, so to speak. Daenerys thwonks her annoying brother over the head. Other things happened. The main bit was that at the end Lady Stark accused the dwarf guy of killing her son, and essentially took him hostage in an inn. Awesome ending.
I'm hooked, anyway. Visually it's spectacular, and with these highly rated books to go off, there's a wealth of potential, substantial material to provide an interesting story.

Just watched the 10th episode, and last of the season.
The ending to 9 was boss, and I loved the ending to 10 as well. It sets up next season nicely, to say the least.
That said, some of the characters they've killed off already this season will definitely be missed by me. On the other hand, the way they're not afraid to kill off characters, and do the unexpected, is fantastic in itself.
*despite saying "they're" and "they've" I am aware this is following the events of the books, and the people behind the TV show aren't writing these major plot points.

Yep it's a testament to Martin as a writer that it really doesn't give a **** that he gets you emotionally invested in characters before he kills them off. Fair play to the TV guys though, they have done a largely amazing job of transferring it to screen.

Yeah, this is one of the only cases of a book-to-film adaptation I've ever seen that seems to please the fans of the source material as much as it does the new fans.

I really want to read the books given that the show is so great.

I'm actually kind of glad, for once, that I've not read the books.
Simply because, as much as I love reading, I love a good TV show more. And getting to experience these plot points for the first time on the nice big tele, with a fine cast of actors and some fantastic scenery, is actually more appealing to me than my own imagination and interpretation of a book!

The books, believe it or not are even better and that is no slight on the series, they really are that good. The series does a great job of portraying the overall feel of the story, the action and the characters but the books go into that in so much more detail that it is even more of a joy.
