What makes a good Captain?

Aye but that's all part of being a good player isn't it?

What I mean is imagine being Leighton Baines and listening to Phil Neville tell you how to float a ball down the line.

A good Captain isn't there to tell anyone how to play their game though surely? They are there to be a leadership voice on the pitch, the Managers voice, directing people and making sure the team is cohesive?

For me it has to be the man with the best credentials for the job, a whole host of factors. Respect is probably in my opinion the biggest contributor.

Depends what you want your captain doing.

Some managers have their captain almost as their right hand man, as important to them as their assistant. Some just nominate one virtually because they have to.

Respect comes from being a leader but not a teacher's pet IMO. Neville was the latter, Jagielka is both I think.

EDIT: Worded horrendously. Neville was a teacher's pet, Jagielka leads from within the team.

Some players are just natural captains, so perhaps look at those to figure out what makes a good skipper. John Terry (much as I dislike him) as an example. Thinking back, Tony Adams at Arsenal, and our own Labby back in the day - all natural leaders who stood out head and shoulders above their teammates for this role. Lahm for Germany's another example, and of course Puyol. I think what they all have / had in common is respect from teammates and manager, an indomitable will to win, and that intangible sense of authority that comes naturally to a small percentage of people.

By that measure, Arteta doesn't fit the bill, not sure anyone at Arsenal does. Or at most teams right now for that matter.

Agree with all the first paragraph. Arteta was just the idea for the thread, couldn't care less about Arsenal. Still I would wager he's quite well respected amongst his peers and he seems a nice guy. Irrelevant though. I'm just asking what you lot think makes a good Captain.

We over empathise the roll of a captain.

In most European countries they just give the job to the most experienced player.

You should have more than one leader on the pitch
this really, lahm captained germany and is of course well respected, but schweinsteiger drove them on, didnt get in each others way and both deserve a place on the pitch regardless of an armband, unlike a certain cone collector who captained us for years

The man in my avatar.

YES!!! Thats who!!!!!!

When you think of good captains you think of your Roy Keane's, Patrick Viera's, Kevin Ratcliffe's and Bryan Robson's of the world. The one player that when your back is against the wall can make the rest of the team roar.

A big tackle, a great pass, a powerful run- something that can get the rest of the team motivated when its not going your way.

I personally believe the captain should have a bit of personality, a burning desire to win, respect from his team and opponents and generally be the best if not one of the best players in the side.
