In my last class, I had a "Jaxon" and a "Grace"... guess who did better academically? Guess who had more supportive parents, who were more prepared to cooperate with the school? It's the same everywhere.

Why anyone would name their child after a convicted rapist is beyond me.

The teacher who did it I knew well and I really doubt that he would impose the bias. He was very experienced and was the sort that got on well with kids if all abilities. He did it for fun really.

I don't doubt that, and I wrote that somewhat tongue in cheek, but I don't think anyone should discount bias--whether personal or systemic

C'mon Tree. You know there are tons of data about teacher bias affecting student outcomes. Probably (hopefully) getting less so as it is studied and talked about.

That said, socioeconomics are by far the biggest factor in academic performance.

Or, as I see it, the unbiased are simply those that best understand their own biases, and can account for them sufficiently

I worked for Land Registry for many years. The office I worked in was responsible for registering property in Surrey and Cumbria. We reckoned we could tell if it was a Cumbrian property or a Surrey property just by reading the names. There were very few Fed and Ethels in Surrey and not many Tarquin and Phoebes in Cumbria.

Hard to dispute this, although our third son has two half brothers named in that system and we gave a little thought to naming him Cayden/Kayden for that reason. I guess we got out lucky? (He has a boringly average name)
