Challenger disaster.

I had no grasp of what happened. I was home sick that day. My aunt called, but Mom was off working. She tried to explain, but it bounced off. I didn't get it.

Same. Happened to be home from school due to sickness as well. It’s a very clear memory for me. Still remember what I was eating for lunch that day when it exploded

As a member of the older mob on here I have memories of the JFK shooting in 1963 when I was four, and much more clearly the Aberfan disaster in 1966!
My first clear Everton memory was watching the 1966 FA Cup Final on a black and white tv at my Grandma’s looking out for my Dad in the crowd!

I remember the JFK assassination and also the Cuban missile crisis. On both occasions I was aware that something 'significant' had occured just by the reaction from adults, but neither greatly affected me.
The Aberfan disaster however genuinely upset me and was the first 'world news' that I remember having that affect
