What's the first major/headline news story you can remember?

I remember that day vividly. I was just unhitching my horse from the post outside the apothecary when I hobbadehoy rode up and took some blotting paper out of his mochilla. He read the late-breaking news that President Lincoln had been assassinated four days ago. Honor-bright, I first took him for a goosecap. But as the news sunk in I felt dauncy and wanted to immediately take to the Laudanum I had purchased with a sutler token, but opted for some hardtack. It was a floorer.

Remember watching some Apollo stuff on the neighbours colour TV, but no idea which mission. Cant recall the Apollo 13 rescue at all, but other than football and sport stuff, I reckon the first headline/story I followed was Elvis dying. When was that, 1977? I would have been 12.

Charles and Diana's wedding, but there was a lot of build up leading to that which probably helped cement it into mind even beforehand. Probably the Falklands war if we are talking about breaking news.

I remember when Princess Anne got married (1973) The next day every single newspaper had it splashed all over the front page, with many also having 10 page colour supplements.
The Morning Star had one sentence on page 7
"Traffic was disrupted in Westminster yesterday when Anne Windsor married Mark Philips"
lol lol
