"What's wrong with Everton?" [The Athletic]

Leaving the DoF and manager aside for a second, at this season's end I for one would like to read the collective thoughts of the people at the club tasked with bringing through talent from youth teams to first team and have them explain where they have gone wrong.

They go under the radar, but aside from Gordon (7 appearances in the last 2 seasons) and Branthwaite (2 appearances in the last 2 seasons) we haven't had anyone coming through the ranks, and that's appalling.

So, just why are Messrs Unsworth, Ebbrell, Jeffers, Baines, Southern, Jevons (note the common denominator) allowed to coast like this?

The club have a website there. If Ancelotti has to explain what he thought happened to season 2020/21, why aren't these people giving us their views - especially when Ancelotti's use of youngsters has been queried?

Think Jeffers has left

An academy's hit rate is pretty low across the country. We produce a lot of football players but not necessarily a lot of Everton-level footballers. We have some promising players but not yet ready for exposure. To me our U23 batch are/were really poor, the U18 batch are where to look next and have now been thankfully pushed up a level. Brands hasn't been able to do anything in terms of incomings in that department due to a transfer ban (except Jagne now) and is even harder now with Brexit but the average age has dropped.

I'd hope to see some make appearances in the next year or two but we'll see.
Appalling.

Again with the "everton have too many good players to perform like they do"
We really don't have good players ... most of our players are very poor ... baffles me how many pundits think gylfi sigurdsson is a good player , commentators on every match he plays in always bigging him up , .. I must not understand the game

As has already been mentioned, they probably see highlights of our games and notice that Siggy scores the odd belter. If they watched us all of the time I'm sure their opinions would change.

I'm not sure I'd use that term to quantify the required level?

26 years indulging the owners of Everton with their failure; 26 years of accepting the BS propaganda from the media that we deserve no better than making up the numbers.

Ultimately, we're what's wrong with Everton. Imagine the Kopites putting up with this piss take.

The 4th most successful English club in history - within a decade we'll be about the 6th most successful team, as City and Chelsea race past us with title wins.

Appalling.

That's a really interesting stat, thanks for sharing. I note that two of the teams near the top were relegated, and I think playing inexperienced players would worry most managers if they had alternatives available. I assume those two teams have limited squads, hence more opportunity for the younsters. The really intersting one is Chelsea being up there, who finished in the top four. Could this be the Lampard factor with him being braver to play young players, but who ultimately ended up with the sack due to the results? I don't watch them enough to know whether the new manager has changed the players significantly.

Chelsea had no option than to promote their very good youngsters when they had their transfer ban.

The problem with Everton is simple, you have a board that useless, yet things it’s awesome, doesn’t really care where we finish, you have a chairman who well passed it, you have a DOF who has one hand tied behind his back(academy) and doesn’t have full control of football, this intern effect the manager and the ability to get the right players.
Everton is a charity that has a football team attached.

How to Fix it
-Moshiri needs to replace the board members
-Give Brands full control of football side
-Change the culture from that Well done to That wasn’t good enough, why wasn’t that good enough?
-Make Everton ruthless

He’s got the right manager, still unsure on the DOF

How did we let Bolasie and Besic sit there for 5 years, I almost feel like they agreed to leave then they phone Bill and he talks them in to staying, does any other club have players like we do earning millions that won’t leave?
Sanchez !!! Arsenal to United. £500k a week PLUS probable bonuses. Couldn't get rid of him. Downed tools. Now that WOULD have been a nightmare!

“He’s deadly from free kicks”

when was the last time he scored a free kick?

The European ban hit Everton hard when we were probably the best team in Europe at the time.

After Kendal, poor managerial choices meant we drifted into relegation battles.

Lack of money at a time when the game exploded meant we just got left behind.
Money led to football becoming more London centric.

Missing out on years of Champions League money trapped us in the alsoran category.

The ground had become a millstone holding back our financial performance.

Now When we finally have money, we have squandered a lot and got into a position where we have a dud squad of unshiftable players on high wages.

This is our new millstone, and breaking free is the next great challenge.
