"What's wrong with Everton?" [The Athletic]

Switched off as soon as one of them brought up FIFA ratings.

”it’s like all their players are 81s on FIFA but they have no 87s”

Peak football analysis right there.
I lasted a little longer, until they started calling Godfrey average

What changed Manchester City from a pointless football club with a losers mentality into what they are now?
Millions upon millions of pounds over 10 years.
Pretty easy to change your culture when you have the correct fix.

If you don’t have that financial backing you are always open to having your best players plundered. If you do, you can brush them away because if your financial muscle.
At Everton millions and millions over 6 years and still a pointless football club!

There’s about a thousand threads on here trying to work it out why were pyar shyte! Still no nearer to finding the solution
I'll tell you with a quick story! I owned a small Garden Centre which was getting more successful year on year. Needed a manager that could take a day to day role because was getting to much for me. Had a staff of six who were good workers and conscientious and enjoyed working under me. New manager turned all this around and some of the dedicated staff started to down tools. Started three more staff with good CV's to compensate for the downturn in profits. The existing staff pulled the new recruits down to their level with constant moaning. Nearly three years later i shut the place down with all the hassle, finishing the entire staff and the manager and opened another business up 5 miles away. Completely new staff now, all happy and working together and the place is making money again. So this theory tells me { in my opinion } If certain players stay around a while too long under different managers, stagnate, with no drive left and every training session is a laugh, they will eventually drag most of the new signings with good CV's down to their level. Only needs 3 or 4 players like this to bring down a whole squad.

The conclusion drawn was that we need a culture change...and you sign other cub's captains to get that change.

Two vacuous people who fancy themselves as football philosophers who aren't that bright.

I'm sure we had that under koeman. We had the Ireland captain at the time in Coleman. The Wales captain in Ashley Williams. And I'm sure there was another too. Didn't really help

I really don't think we should overreact to a win and a draw over 38 injury-ravaged games with a thin squad keeping us out of Europe.

What's wrong with us is that we thoroughly booted two transfer windows in three years and are short a half-dozen contributors as a consequence. Hence the thin squad full of ponies on a wage that don't play.

When the squad is thin, the players you do have tend to start getting overuse injuries. That and a shoestring budget for years probably tend to explain the club's injury history.

Move a few ponies out and get a few ballers in and the level of play should improve.
Spot on and to add the so called first choice players had no competition for their place due to lack of depth. Then complacency crept in too for 2nd half of season.

The problem with Everton is simple, you have a board that useless, yet things it’s awesome, doesn’t really care where we finish, you have a chairman who well passed it, you have a DOF who has one hand tied behind his back(academy) and doesn’t have full control of football, this intern effect the manager and the ability to get the right players.
Everton is a charity that has a football team attached.

How to Fix it
-Moshiri needs to replace the board members
-Give Brands full control of football side
-Change the culture from that Well done to That wasn’t good enough, why wasn’t that good enough?
-Make Everton ruthless

He’s got the right manager, still unsure on the DOF

How did we let Bolasie and Besic sit there for 5 years, I almost feel like they agreed to leave then they phone Bill and he talks them in to staying, does any other club have players like we do earning millions that won’t leave?

If they weren't like this we wouldn't love them. We were chosen by Everton to feel more pain than most people. Even when we win something invariably goes wrong it's all part of the suffering we were chosen to undertake.

I love Americans and admire their country with all its faults. Which country does not have faults past and present? I take it this is an American sports magazine? What do they know about Everton and the premiership? Answer is zilch.

Leaving the DoF and manager aside for a second, at this season's end I for one would like to read the collective thoughts of the people at the club tasked with bringing through talent from youth teams to first team and have them explain where they have gone wrong.

They go under the radar, but aside from Gordon (7 appearances in the last 2 seasons) and Branthwaite (2 appearances in the last 2 seasons) we haven't had anyone coming through the ranks, and that's appalling.

So, just why are Messrs Unsworth, Ebbrell, Jeffers, Baines, Southern, Jevons (note the common denominator) allowed to coast like this?

The club have a website there. If Ancelotti has to explain what he thought happened to season 2020/21, why aren't these people giving us their views - especially when Ancelotti's use of youngsters has been queried?

An academy's hit rate is pretty low across the country. We produce a lot of football players but not necessarily a lot of Everton-level footballers. We have some promising players but not yet ready for exposure. To me our U23 batch are/were really poor, the U18 batch are where to look next and have now been thankfully pushed up a level. Brands hasn't been able to do anything in terms of incomings in that department due to a transfer ban (except Jagne now) and is even harder now with Brexit but the average age has dropped.

I'd hope to see some make appearances in the next year or two but we'll see.
