"What's wrong with Everton?" [The Athletic]

There is nothing "wrong" with Everton. We are the 10th best club in England and have been in the top flight for 66 years on the bounce.

It would of course be nice to be better but there is nothing "wrong" with us either.

I think we need to take a step back and look at the situation a bit dispassionately.

We have had a disappointing season no doubt, but partly down to our early season form and what could've been.

We have made progress in terms of points and wins. We need to use that next season and aim for another 10 points - 3 more wins effectively.

The squad needs improvement and our aim.should be to strengthen the first team and move those players who currently don't offer much into the squad until we can move them on - ether through profit or contract expiry. If we want to consider ourselves peers of the 'top 6' we need to stop thinking of the squad as the XI on the pitch and look at having improved quality across 15-17 players. Selling 8-9 players this summer won't help that, all it does is put added pressure onto new recruitment.

Similarly, we need to develop a strategy of bringing through youngsters. Hopefully the changes that Brands is making will do that, but it will take time.

As a fanbase, we probably need to accept that it's a project and searching for instant results is foolish. Poor recruitment has hampered us badly, we need to look towards young, quick, hungry players (who may use us as a stepping stone) but who will want to impress. Then build our quality year on year.

Think they nailed in the first minute. No outstanding players who consistently change games with their quality. I think it says a lot that our players are rarely talked about in terms of a move away to a bigger club. Even the ones we rate very highly aren't on the radar of the top teams.

The statistical point made about Everton's youngsters being kept at bay more than almost any other club in the PL is a shaming one.

That's unsustainable.

It goes to Brands again, ultimately. He's not doing his job if, after 3 years, he's not working with managers to get the U-21s into the team. There was no excuse for the last 2 games not to have youngsters on the pitch...and that is the minimum they should have been given.

He doesn't pick the side, Dave and nor should he. If Carlo wants to play them he'll play them.

Brands is at most U23 and U18 games so he knows the score.

He's a DoF - his job it is to get a style of play and identity for Everton: the managers fit in around that. That's how the situation works.
