"What's wrong with Everton?" [The Athletic]

Where under the DoF job roles does "make Carlo pick youth players" fall?

There isn't a DoF with the credibility to make a three-time European Cup winner pick players he doesn't want to pick. If Carlo really wants to leave, he can always just do as he likes until Moshiri and Brands are forced to concede that their best play is to give Carlo what he wants and have him take the exit door by mutual agreement so that they don't have to continue to pay his salary.

If we had a stronger youth program, that would be the strongest 'Carlo Out' argument possible. Since we don't, there isn't really a 'Carlo Out' argument to be had.

We haven't got a stand out academy side but Dave's right, was no real reason not to give a couple some mins, I know people say "7th was still on" but I mean we had to be very luck and beat City as well.

However, don't agree not playing kids is anything to do with Brands since he doesn't pick the side.

Were not professional enough at playing football what I mean is that we turn up whenever it suits the players to put in a collective effort very rarely because we don't train with intensity or the required effort needed

I'd have to be persuaded beyond conjecture and anecdote that he's having anything like influence.

The Brands decision doesn't happen if Moshiri and Ancelotti dont want it to happen.
He's still very much the chairman, as evidenced by his performance during the ESL circus, and he's routinely mentioned when details of negotiations are brought up in interviews. It was also stated that him being retained until the new stadium is delivered was part of the takeover agreement.

Plus, there's no way that Rooney, Barrett-Baxendale and all the various crony academy appointments weren't his doing.

Agreed for the most part. Both of these things are true: We don't have a good enough pipeline of U21 players, which falls on Brands in a large part. But also one of the weaknesses that Carlo has shown is giving legit time to the likes of Nkounkou. There are so many factors involved (eg training, grasp of English, etc.) that makes it very tough for us to judge from the outside. BUT using Nkounkou as an example, he definitely showed enough in pre-season to earn some minutes in place of some of the wasters on the team this season. Seems like Pickford was the only player who was "benched" due to performance this season, and lo and behold, it worked to improve his play. I want to see more of that. It has to be a collaboration between Brands to add better depth and bring in better U21s, and Carlo to play those that are available to him but are unproven.

Many things done wrong, nothing to hide there.

But what did we do right? We won away, also against teams we haven't won against in a long while. Shouldn't the question be Can Carlo build on this? That is to improve home form and sustain competitiveness away. We were in the mix for Europe till near the end, something we haven't been for a while too.

I'm a bit stunned that "pundits" ask this question right now, shouldn't their expertise be enough to see the players we've got won't get us much higher than 10th in a competetive season? So what went wrong actually, were we favourites for 4th? Personally don't think so

I'm with both of you regarding playing the kids, at least once the game was lost and with you regarding Brands having no say on who plays. My point is just that it goes beyond picking the side not being Brands' job. Carlo has the clout to give the finger to any directive to play kids from Moshiri/Brands if Carlo so chooses, since he can just ignore the directive and put them in a position where they can either ask him nicely to take the exit door or decide to live with it.

A manager with a lesser reputation could be maneuvered into a position where he would have to follow such an directive or face a much more costly sacking.

I wish we could hear an actual job description, agenda, and plan from Brands. Arguably his role is even more important than Ancelotti's, if he's supposed to be here for the long-term and is supposed to be the person that brings consistency and long-term vision to the football. This kind of thing is not to criticise or rubbish his work, but just to really know what the strategy is! We all assume he's into transfers, but his role has got to be far far more than just scouting and signings.

My problem with the academy in general is with the crap we put on the field (Iwobi, Andre, etc.) you’d think that is the cue to give the youth some burn. Even if only to push some of the others for their place. A lot of times you end up uncovering gems this way too.

I don’t think buying a bunch of 30 year old lads for 30 mil will get you very far when it’s all said and done (unless they are James for instance). We need a more sustainable talent system.

He's supposed to make that option irresistable by producing players who have the style required...set by a DoF...but we dont have one.

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

He's tolerated. That's it.

All roads on every major decision lead to Moshiri's door.

Worth watching? Given modern day lazy reporters, I'm guessing their article is probably gleaned from trawling the likes of GOT, so there will be nothing new to be said. If we watch Everton regularly, we fans will have more insight than a reporter sat at a desk in the US somewhere.

The Athletic's usually alright as it has a dedicated writer or two for each club and they're usually local or very well connected with reliable sources. Deffo better than the ad revenue driven clickbait that accounts for 99% of football writing....the word writing being used in the absolute loosest of terms in comparison to skilled sports writers and actual journalists.

That vid though just seems like a couple of generic reporters trying to cover every club - which inevitably leads to reliance on the ongoing narrative, bias and preconceptions a lot of the time. Bit like TV pundits really - nobody has time to watch every game in detail and analyse every player, team or manager in an entire league so inevitably have to take shortcuts.

Short answer - nah mate, absolute gash.

I dont think anyone would deny that the points they make are all correct. Too many mediocre players, culture of acceptance of mediocrity - NSNO? plucky Everton, no desire to dominate games.... All rang true to me.
A lot of this is behind many on here wanting massive player clearouts
