"What's wrong with Everton?" [The Athletic]

The only thing carried out with professionalism since Moshiri arrived has been that stadium scheme. So far. The rest has been a calamity worse than when Kenwright was here. Moshiri is a back seat driver screwing everything up (most of all every appointment he makes); the CEO is a useless chugger; the DoF is a disaster. We've seen half a billion spent on the squad and hiring and firing of managers and we on the same level as Villa and worse off than Leeds.
I agree that Moshiri is out of his depth when it comes to what a football club needs. He needs to be outsourcing that to someone whilst he concentrates on doing what got him into a position that he could go around buying football clubs.

Moshiri should be talking regularly to the CEO and a few key people to show he is paying attention as much as he is keeping scrutiny of his investment and after that just be turning up and watching the game whilst everyone smiles politely and makes sure he has a good time. Get the right person in as CEO and then give them time. DBB was a decent appointment on paper given her close connection to the club. But there hasn't seen success on the field to the level we would like to see - how much longer does a CEO in the normal business world get? Maybe a year given that there's been a lot of upheaval recently outside her control, unless there's an underlying plan that is still being achieved that we are not privy to but 10th in the league is not nil satis nisi optimum.

Aren't the Athletic just a bunch of virgins who club together a mix of words and opinions from football writers and pundits then pass the articles off as their own? I might be wrong like but no chance I'm having some beauts who've probably never been to Goodison telling me whats wrong with the club.
Anybody could look at the league table and see we've had a below average season.

She's not an industry expert. Not a corporate. You can see from her taking up that football task force post last week that she is ENTIRELY expendable at Everton.

In essence: Moshiri is the CEO; he also hires and fires manager as a DoF would usually do.

Moshiri is the problem at Everton, and he hires people who become a problem, in turn.

You're thinking of Grandoldteam.com

They are pretty spot on, they are admitting to not really knowing the answer, so are speculating. Like all of us do.

Culture is a fairly diffuse causal explanation. What would have been more interesting to know is:

How do we recruit new players? That is, what kind of empirical evidence do we base our decisions on. We can not possibly be happy with the recruitment for the last 5 years.

How does the physical training match with the latest knowledge in the field? Are we at the forefront here, or do we need to upgrade our knowledge.

How good are we at injury prevention? Are we at the forefront here, or do we need to upgrade our knowledge.

I take it for granted that the club has hired a nutritionist and sports psychologist?

Do we have the best possible coaches in the club? Are we developing good enough players?

Do we have good enough data analysts and scouts, so that we do good analyzes on opponents and players?

How are the training sessions? Do they have good enough intensity?

These are just some of the questions that a serious organization should continually ask itself. Blaming culture is too easy, and one should instead identify the problem.

Good post mate. I actually think a lot of the answers above are "yes" but are big issue is the club is not joined up at all in it's thinking. You have lots of different people pulling in slightly different directions. I don't really get the sense we have a single, unified strategy we are working towards.

I mean even not filling the bench up with younger players seems very odd to me. You think of a lad like Thierry Small who is teetering over leaving. If he was in the squad, and maybe got the 15 minutes at the end we have to Bernard, would that have helped?

It’s a poor attitude by the players and a lack of professionalism, if your not mentally and physically prepared for a game that’s just negligence.

we have seen this with the previous management too so it’s systemic and indicates a culture problem at the club.

essentially is a losers mentality rather than an environment where failure is part of the course.

Ultimately players have to want to win and too many of this lot just don’t seem to care

Culture is a definite an area of focus.

No point in shiny stadiums, contract dave giggling with new players and a legend manager if the team that takes to the pitch are just happy to bank the dough and smile for the press.

Kenwright never left.

Whose idea do you think it was to appoint the new CEO?
