Which World Cup Was Your Favourite?

That's the best part! An iconic moment.

Bracewell was not in the squad. He had a broken leg.
Aye. Very controversial but an equally dubious moment helped England win it in 66 anyway (why didn't Hunt just stick the rebound in??) . The 4 Blues in the team made that WC more special and improved the team but England never looked good enough to win the whole thing, in fairness. Lots has been made about Diego's 'dark arts' in this thread- justifiably- but Argentina were the much better side throughout that game, and were all over us until the final 10 mins (even then, when we pulled a goal back, Maradona went on one of his crazy runs and they ended up hitting a post).

The hand of god is the kind of thing that if one of your own players does it, it's seen as a bit cheeky (Mountfield did it earlier that season and even Alan Ball includes a photo of him doing it vs Arsenal in his autobiography, so hardly trying to hide it...but when it happened vs England, Maradona was demonised like he was Charles Manson or something. Purely the ref/linesman's faults for not seeing something so obvious.

Brace wasn't selected for the squad that year, it seemed to be either him or Reidy for that place- then he finally had the op he'd been due for a few months on his ankle (courtesy of Billy Whitehurst).

The best 10 World Cup matches of the last 40 years, for me, were:

Belgium v USSR 1986
This was always my top choice as favourite 'non-England' game growing up. It had the added bonus of my mum letting me stay up late despite school the next day (it maybe finished after 1.00am) and they had some excellent players, despite being underdogs (Ceulemans, Vercauteren, Scifo, Gerets). It's not as good as game as Italy-Brazil or France-West Germany but they both had the wrong winners from a fan point of view (even though Italy possibly deserved it, France were robbed)...and my nan was born in Belgium, so i've always rooted for them.

Great list though, although England-WG 1990 and Holland-Spain 2014 may have gotten in my list.

International football was quite weird back then.

These days the international squads are by and large made up of the best players. You may got one or two left out of the squad that would raise a few eyebrows. Players really had to work to get into a squad back then. Alvin Martin and Terry Fenwick ahead of Derek Mountfield for example, Bracewell only winning three caps and struggling to beat out Steve Hodge etc.

Scotland was always the mad one though they had so many great players in the 80s. Many of which barely played for them, Sharp (12 caps), Steve Nicol (27), Gary Gillespie (13) Alan Hansen (26), all won loads.

I think certain teams feel more fun when they cheat, Argentina, Uruguay etc, but teams like Brazil cheating feels wrong.

Argentina 1978, loved everything about it, the whole spectacle, ticker tape and late nights, my dad coming downstairs and telling me to get to bed

Same as. The Argentina Peru match - which perhaps was very dodgy in hindsight - lives on in my memory. It was my sister who came down to tell me off !!

I vaguely remember Brazil winning in 1970 so my first real WC Finals memory was 1974.

I remember Uruguay were really horrible in their approach and finished bottom of their group.

. The battle of East and West Germany was a completely damp squid as the West were through no matter what. East won late on.

However, the final with Maier. Vogts Beckenbauer, Hoeness Muller, Krol, Haan, Neeskens, Rensenbrink, Rep, Cruyff all on the same pitch, Ah For flip's sake!! Never to be repeated.

As a 9 year old I was absolutely enraptured with those players. Watched it all in black and white - we didn't get our first colour TV until 76 - just in time for the Dublin V Kerry All Ireland Final :)
