Mexico 86 , Brilliant world cup blessed with stars like Maradona ,Socrates , Butragueno , Lineker, Platini, Laudrup ,Sanchez, Plus first time and only time I managed to complete my panini sticker album,

Good world cup but let down by empty virtually stadiums and those annoying john 3.16 banners at every ground got to me.

Not particularly arsed anymore. Used to enjoy seeing unknown players coming through. It all seems more predictable now and all the best players are well known at the top European clubs.

Would I be correct in saying that the commentary basically back then came down a telephone line which was maybe why it sounded a bit crackly? I remember watching a few of the games in 1978(the evening ones in our time zone)and it really did sound like an event from the other side of the world!

Well, those crackly telephone line atmospheres certainly beat the dulcet tones of Sam Matterface in Dolby Surround Sound.

Let's face it, when you get to a certain age everything - the tournaments, the mascots, the players, the kits, the goal nets, the stadia, the balls, the atmospheres, the commentators, the heinous dictatorships - seemed better in the past.

Argentina 78 was a great World Cup with the ticker paper. Really Caught on at Goodison
The best for me was Spain 82. Loved this tournament.
Paulo Rossi was amazing. Italy won the the World Cup after a slow start.
I advise anybody to try and watch the game between Brazil and Italy. It was one of the best games. Rossi was immense.
