USA 94 for me.
Romario & Bebeto up front for Brazil.
I could be wrong, but werent it the same tournament when Maradona went nuts after scoring, and Amo scored a worldie?
From what I’ve seen, I think Spain 82 is up there
You’ve got the upsets (Algeria over Germany, N. Ireland over Spain)
The controversy (Germany Vs Austria, Battiston)
The great sides (Brazil, France)
The great kits
The Great matches (Italy Vs Brazil, Germany Vs France)
And worthy winners who bounced back from a weak start to win the whole shebang
Plus, it happened in the TV Era so it’s very easy to hunt matches down
1974 was also my favourite but it was not my first which was 66.1974 was the first one I remember as a young kid.
East Germany beating West Germany
The West Germany v Sweden game in pissing down rain (on a Sunday IIRC)
Poland v West Germany delay because of the water logged pitch
Brazil being thugs and completely shocking me
Cruyff's turn / Jonny Rep's poaching
Muller's winner V Holland
Everyone laughing at Zaire
Scotland being there and England not
Australia!!
Jack Taylor reffing the final
1986 in Mexico what an occasion. Loved it, loved my wallchart. 7 years old. Spellbound

Good post. I think this sums up WC 1990. It was the WC that had way more poor games than any other- England/Ireland's groups was so dull (a total of 7 goals in 6 games) but you couldn't help being swept away by it as an England and/or Ireland fan- it had such a good vibe and the music seemed everywhere (Nessun Dorma & World in Motion).Italia 90 for me, I was 10 years old and mad about football, that summer I can still remember it like yesterday. A lot of the games were actually pretty defensive dull affairs but you couldn't help but be swept along by England's run, Gazza mania getting into full flow and the general hype around the tournament. From an era when there wasn't as much live football on TV you now had afew weeks with constant football on TV the BBC went all in on their coverage as did ITV with Saint and Greavsie on top form. All this to a soundtrack of Pavarotti.
Cruyff was as dominant in 74 as Maradona was in 86....both had outstanding tournaments but weren't great in the final itself (both marshalled well by Vogts and Matthaus respectively). The big difference being Holland faced a great WG team (in their own backyard), Argentina faced a lesser one (in Latin America).1974 was also my favourite but it was not my first which was 66.
It's just 74 was the first one I remember watching a lot of games in the pub in sunny weather and good match times.
Also Cruff was probably my all time favourite player pure class.
