Which World Cup Was Your Favourite?

86 World cup was a belter for me too. Maradona breaking my heart, but scoring one of the greatest goals i've ever seen. Absolute genius of a player, the GOAT and the player that made me completely fall in love with footy. Levels above anyone else at that tournament.
The ITV theme tune for 1986 was boss too, probably the best one (although Argentina 78 was memorable).

France 98 for me, was still at school when it was on and was lucky to turn up to school twice the whole time it was on as I'd stay up all night watching the games. The SBS coverage in Australia was brilliant as well as it was just before football became mainstream here so you'd get proper in depth stories done on players and the countries where as now you just get a couple of ex players with no personality talking crap and providing no insight into anything.

If any of the other Aussies on here are reading this they'll know how good the Les Murray & Johnny Warren days of SBS were. Miss both them chaps R.I.P

I think Voller was the manager of that Germany team that got destroyed 5-1 by England. I think the Dutch camp was plagued by infighting at that 1990 World Cup. That sort of thing of course is a pretty frequent problem with Dutch teams.
It is, happened in 96 too. From what i've read Voller seems like a top bloke, as does Rijkaard, so it goes to show how big the rivalry was when reduced to spitting at him. Funny but I never liked Voller- must have been the mullet- but years later i found out how loved he was with German fans, while Matthaus was mostly hated.

Argentina 78 was my first and staying up to see 11.30 pm kick offs added to the excitement.
Brilliant Italy team who peaked too soon and ran out of steam in the second stage.
Exotic names like Cubillas, Kempes, Dirceu, Rensenbrink and Gemmil.
The previous season had been my first visiting Goodison and this World Cup got me completely hooked on international footie.

82 was probably my favourite though. That wonderful Brazil team. First glimpse of Maradona and the French midfield with Platini eclipsing Hoddle as my favourite non Everton player.

The drama of Maradona's red card, Paolo Rossi's hattrick and Schumacker trying to decapitate Battiston.

An Italy team that eventually won the thing outright, needed a last minute penalty to knock Australia out of that 2006 World Cup.

For some reason, I can’t help but feel the next two will be crackers after Qatar.

2026: USA, Mexico, Canada
2030: Bid Centanario (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay) or Spain & Portugalz

Just feels like the majority of those are football mad, and it’ll be a fantastic spectacle. Same goes for Euro2024 in Germany.

My dad's Scottish and to be fair didn't put pressure on me to support them but I think I always gravitate towards the underdog (hence I'm on this forum I suppose). Italia 90 was when I realised Scotland weren't very good but it was too late by then. I remember finishing school at 330 and running home, slipping in dog poo on the way to settle in and watch us lose to Costa Rica. I'd confidently boosted of a convincing win so got loads of grief at school the next day ?

That it. I've got someone called Dragan Stoikovich in my head. Spelling is probably a bit off
Stojkovic played for Yugoslavia. Quality player like most of that side was.

There is a great documentary about that side and the split called The Last Yugoslavian Football Team (imaginative title). but I can't for the life of me find it with English subs any more.
