My argument isn't about any particular metric.

It's about the pointlessness of it all. It's the last desperate straw clutch of a drowning man's argument.

My club is somehow better than yours because we won the league a few times when the players were wearing long shorts, had brylocreemed centre partings and smoked 3 cigs at halftime. Who's arsed outside that particular club?

Lets take your example to the extreme. Everton win the league, Champions League and FA Cup two years on the bounce while RS flounder in the Championship. How arsed are you exactly about their more trophy laden history and how much would you laugh if one of their cult tried claim superiority on that basis?

Well when it boils down to it almost everything is pointless! We live our lives in terms of metrics, right from school - 'my dad's bigger than your dad'. 'We've got a better car'. 'The club I support is bigger'. It's what we do else there wouldn't be much to talk about.

Those old achievements do play a part in the modern world. It's how a club like us are moving to a 53k (should be larger really) stadium when we haven't won zip for 25 years. All those starting from the first league title win to Dixie Dean in the 30's, led to more fans, who took their children, who encouraged more friends. Kids who support Everton but hadn't even seen a derby win in their lifetime are given pride by past wins (look son we DID used to win stuff!) and the hope for more. If we'd have won one milk cup in 60's I bet they would have been asking for City shirts for Christmas. The lure of the big club still remains.

It's all irrelevant but at the same time important.

They're both historic clubs, but Arsenal are the bigger. Ever present in the top division, and a long history of winning trophies. Hardly out of the top 6 in the last 50 years, and a lot more supporters than Chelsea. My mum's family were Chelsea supporters and I used to go a bit in the 70s. They were middle of the table, and then became a yo-yo club for a while before their current success started in the late 1990s. Chelsea always had more flair, being located where they are, Arsenal more stuffed shirts. Arsenal need a new owner, American owners don't understand football.

Loads more Arsenal and Spurs fans in London than Chelsea fans, it’s not even close.

Chelsea probably have bigger global fanbase though as their success coincided with the premier leagues huge growth abroad in the mid 2000s
Not strictly true. North and East London yes. South and West London no. FWIW of course Arsenal are historically a far more successful ‘bigger’ club but who gives a monkey’s? I don’t but I love it, just love it when we beat them. I still love to see Liverpool get beat the most though, so I suppose they must be the grand daddy of them all.

Depends on your definition of what makes a big club. From a traditional perspective its Arsenal without question. From a modern perspective probably Chelsea.

Arsenal no question, got the history, the fan base, everything about them is bigger. Their fans aren’t as racist either
Every club has its share of idiotic ignoramuses though, even Everton. The ‘Everton are white’ chant didn’t exactly materialise out of thin air and before I get consigned to the bin I’d like to add that I don’t think that 99% of Everton fans are racist. You’re a good bunch, which is why I signed up on here!

What's the difference between traditional and modern perspectives? Chelsea's consistent success over the last 20 years is just as valid as Arsenal's success during the 1930's. A time when Arsenal were known as The Bank Of England Club due to their spending....the same kind of approach that people get sniffy about with any clubs that have recent success.

A lot of people seem to get stuck on who was a "big" club during their childhood or teens and seem to discount anything more recent as artificial.

Yeah that's true TBF.

Charlie George in 1971 and Michael Thomas in 1989.Our own Joe Mercer played in their 1950 fa cup winning team, that beat the rs. Despite some of their spoilt brat fans, Arsenal have always come across to me as a club of class. Class players over the years, and Highbury was such a great stadium as well. No other club in London, can match Arsenal's history heritage and tradition.
