Dad’s cousin was (and still occasionally is) a referees assessor. He always said Maison is the worst he’s ever seen. Thoroughly incompetent.

He would vomit before every game because he was too nervous, and because of these nerves, he would make awful decisions and try to compensate by giving decisions to top teams.

Can’t remember why he said he never got demoted/sacked. It’s a bit of a ‘club’ for the refs, they don’t want to throw eachother under the bus. This also has the added effect of stifling better refs from leagues below.

One of the most bizarre decisions was Poll’s decision to blow the final whistle while the ball was in the air from Don Hutchinson’s shot in the derby in 2000!
Re the “Clattenburg” derby, that was one of the most biased refereeing performances ever, largely because Mr S Gerrard refereed it from start to finish! I remember walking back to the car afterwards fuming, phoning my brother and telling him we had just been cheated!

Mark Halsey was actually a very, very good referee imo, probably the best of his era. He often pops up on TalkSport to discuss the weekend’s controversies and always talks sense and isn’t afraid to throw refs under the bus if they’ve had a shocking performance. Complete mirror opposite to that [Poor language removed] Peter Walton on BT whose knob is so far up Riley’s bum it’s embarrassing.

Can't stand Michael Oliver, massive attention seeking little blert he is. If you watch him during a game at some point during the 90 mins he will step over the ball and do a back heel, he does it in every game without fail. You just know he is a failed player.

I forget the chaps name, it would have been going back 20 years maybe, but he admitted to being a Liverpool fan after he retired.

There is a picture of him punching the air and grinning after the RS had scored at The Pit, in a game he was refereeing. You can see their players behind him, still in the post-goal celebration huddle.

God knows how many times they benefitted from decisions during his career.
