Who was better than who

Think some of these comments are well wide of the mark.
* Speed never refused to travel to West Ham.
* His silence was due to his respect for the club & fans, not to protect himself.
* He left for the same reason that a certain person never got the England job

His silence was supposed to protect the club, that's what I alluded to in my post. But in the end it had the opposite effect. It was the equivalent of someone saying I've got some gossip but I can't tell you. All it does is pique interest and start tongues wagging. His stance of i can't say what it is as it will damage the club had the opposite effect of what he obviously intended.

At no point did I say he did it to protect himself. In fact, to the contrary, I literally said that he ended up shouldering 100% of the blame, which led to him becoming a hate figure for the next decade. Only Nick Barmby leaving to join the RS would get anywhere near the level of stick Speed did on every return. Not even Rooney kissing the United badge or taking the piss on Alan Balls day got him as nasty a reception as was reserved for Gary "bad language removed" Speed.

My post was not intended to be a slight on Speed. It was to highlight that he was a great player and to show that thanks to how badly mismanaged we were as a club at the time, we missed out on plenty of things, including the prime years of Speeds career, who could've and should've captained us for years.

Thanks Kever, point taken, but you also mentioned that he missed the bus when we were struggling.
Before that West Ham game we were placed 13th with 26 points with 15 games left to play, hardly struggling.
The fact that after he left, it all went downhill and we escaped relegation on last day probably strengthens his reasons for leaving.

Its funny you say that actually, because I never even considered the league table at the time. I just remember being very worried that we were in trouble, which was an all too regular occurrence in my teenage years, and I remember we had looked ropey to say the least. It's probably one of those Everton things where you fear the worst regardless, but I vividly remember a last minute away win at Leicester not long before (Speed had scored a pen after Cadamateri had dived to win it). I remember thinking around that time that we were struggling and fearing the worst.

I Didn't even realise we were as high as 13th, but it certainly didn't feel like a comfortable 13th if we were. And Speed leaving in the January only made me more pessimistic, especially as he had been instrumental in our run in the year before (that diving header at home vs Spurs).

And I absolutely hated losing him to Newcastle as well. I already hated them for signing Beardsley. Then they signed Speed, and then the following season they signed Ferguson. Being thankful for small graces, at least they didn't get Rooney when he left.

But yes, it was a strange and stressful time to be an Everton fan. Even when we would regularly take points of the RS.

It got asked in my WhatsApp group..
Trevor Steven Vs Andrei Kanchelskis
Mikel Arteta Vs Steven Pienaar
Joe Parkinson Vs Gareth Barry
Tim Cahill Vs Gary Speed
Havnt seen trevor Steven play so I’d have to go with;
Kanchelskis
Pienaar (how we could do with another of him)
Barry
Cahill

I've been taking notice of football since Kendall mk2 1990-1991 my best team based on performances since then would be.

Martyn
Coleman Watson Jagielka Baines
Kanchelskis Arteta Barry Richarlison
James
Lukaku

Subs
Southall, Jackson, Lescott, Parkinson, Speed, Cahill, Yakubu

I picked Martyn over 90s Southall but it was still very close. Its difficult to compare some positions as what was expected of a 90s full back is different to what is expected now.
