We're a toxic club. The owner clearly knows nothing. There is no structure above the manager. The squad is a disaster with no direction that will take years to properly sort out and all of those issues come at a place with absolutely zero patience to allow gradual progress. We deserve it at this point.
It’s a shame, because I still think there is a nucleus of a decent side there with some of the better players.

But, bad owner, dinosaur and clueless manager and a load of rot to clear on the playing staff certainly makes it a bit of a challenge.

We basically need the next version of a “young Moyes”. Somebody hungry who wants to make a name for themselves but is hard faced enough to get rid of the slackers and half arsed senior pros.

I don't think this part is true. We were willing to give Carlo time even tho the team played some of the worst football many of us have ever seen. Many were willing to give him time because it what is needed. Benitez is an awful fit for this club in so many ways and our owner seems to be almost literally giving us all the middle finger trying to prove some point to someone that nobody can understand.

I don’t think the squad is a disaster. We have the England goalkeeper. Gray, DCL and Rich are 3 good forward options at a decent age. Douc is a decent box to box. Keane and Mina are a good CB partnership if they can stay fit.

Gordon and Branthwaite are young players with first team potential. I am not convinced Godfrey has the ability to be a first team player in a top half prem side but could be a useful squad player like Davies

Coleman, Allan and Townsend are deep into the back 9 of their careers but are good pro’s to have around the squad.

Some of the deadwood (Iceland, Delph, Tosun) on big money leave at the end of the season.

That leaves Gomes, Holgate and Iwobi as the big problems. Players not contributing on decent money who will struggle to find another club

We need to hope the full-backs recruited can deliver next season as this is a clear area of weakness. We also have very little technical ability in the squad. If you look at the best team in the league they have Foden, Silva and De Bruyne. We don’t have one budget version of this type of player since getting rid of James and Bernard. It would be useful to have and option like this in the squad.

The problem for me is there is so little technical ability. You can't really play a possession style with a team that includes Allan and Doucoure in midfield and Richarlison and/or Townsend as a wide player. Same goes for Coleman although hopefully that is sorted now and any of the CBs who aren't Keane and Mina. It makes it hard.

Pickford being the England keeper means nothing, he's average at best and has been for three seasons now. The midfield on the whole is complete garbage. For me Doucoure isn't even decent, he does one thing well and that's get forward, if he's not having an impact there he's pointless. Allan is fine but has little left in his legs. There is nothing else of use. Defense is a TBD with two new faces coming in. I too believe in Mina and Keane but we don't see Mina nearly enough for that to matter.

The forwards are encouraging. Richarlison, DCL, Gray, Gordon and Townsend is an intriguing mix of talent and styles of play (replacing Townsend with an actually good left footer would be nice). So you could build around that potentially I guess, but there just is a lot of work to do.

How can you think there’s a nucleus of a good squad?

I wouldn’t sell Richarlison and Calvert Lewin, the rest I couldn’t care less about.

2 players in a 20+ man squad worth keeping (possibly Pickford too on this seasons form).

The problem is that you have to get the ball up to the attackers. That is what managers for Everton have struggled with. When they have partially succeeded with a "primitive" style, they have received criticism, and got the fans on their necks. When they have tried to play expansively with this gang, they have been overtaken by the opponent.

Ancelotti eventually gave up, and quite clearly expressed the lack of technical skills of this gang. Benitez has said the same thing, and has been pretty clear that so far the only way to achieve success is solid defensive organization, quick transitions, and dead balls. Unfortunately, he has not yet succeeded, although there were promising tendencies in the beginning.

Alternatively, they can set the line high, try on counter-pressure and 2 and 3 balls, but they have too many players who do not have the legs, and players in the defensive line who will be exposed on pace. The Keane and Digne combination has been a big problem defensively, and if you include Allan in this equation, it's the recipe for disaster.

Benitez has not been able to achieve defensive organization is the issue. I actually think if we did we're not far away from a competent side but he can do it.

As well as those 2 I’d keep Pickford, Doucoure, Digne, Godfrey, Gray and Townsend (for the squad, good honest pro)….the rest I’m not arsed about.

Have you seen the interview with Lampard on Sky with Neville? He's full of passion and really hungry to prove himself. I think he was hard done to at Chelsea. He is so switched on to the modern game compared to Rafffa, I think he is worth a shot.

I don't agree that Moshi is a bad owner, he's put plenty of cash in and improved the club in so many ways, but clearly not had any luck finding a good long term manager. Lampard could be the perfect fit for a long term manager, he's the perfect age to grow with us to the champions league spots, which will take 4 seasons at least.

This is what I hope for in the coming months, that we concede far fewer goals and become more solid defensively. Here I have full confidence in Benitez.
