"Why Are Barcelona So Annoying?"

Of course they are a business but I dont see them as trying to get away with being something they're not. They just go about it differently.

As Real or Man Citeh swing about saying my dicks bigger and pumping money here their and everywhere....Barca do their business on the quiet behind closed doors for the most part.

As for the sponsorship thing....they dont need to do it but they do. And seeing it from a different point for view, makes a change from clubs that are all about "how much can we make money wise." Getting bollocked for giving cash to a charity is a bit harsh.

As for the way they play.....Im sure Barca do play the way you've mentioned....

They generally do pass from goalkeeper, midfield to forwards and rarely, if ever, hoof while keeping possession. Even when they're under the cosh they pass their way out. And they generally play through teams, rarely shoot out side the box unless a bank of 10 players are stopping them getting through.

It's undeniable too that wingers hitting the dead ball line and swinging crosses in for an aerial threat is an exciting dimension to a football match

They play that too. Messi played wide right plenty of times and did it a few seasons back. Nowdays Pedro and Keita are used as wingers to hit the by line and ping balls in. That was also a reason why they bought Ibrahimović last season...to get on the end of crosses etc for height and to pick up the ball if they play route one.

So to say they're 1 dimensional is a bit harsh. Its not as if its a case of "do this and it stops Barca" because it never works so there must be more dimensions to how they play.

And anyway..."more than just a club" is a slogan. I mean, if "the Peoples Club" was taken litterally Davek would've killed himself by now.

Barca can play differently when they have to...as all teams can. I just cant sit through their A-game for very long, to be honest. In fact, I find myself hoping when I do watch them that they go down to 10 men as it makes it a better spectacle because they're forced to mix it up a bit more. I accept Messi's genius. That aside, I can only stand so much of the nice little triangles they and their admirers seem to glory in. Sorry, that's just me.

Identity wise: I saw an interview on BBC 24 a week ago with outgoing president, Joan Laporta, and the sense of smugness was unbearable. It just comes across as a right old load of cobblers when a millionaire owner of a fabulously wealthy club (that, by the way, can pay ridiculous prices for players like Alves when they have to) is talking about the social side of a club as if it's the primary activity. All major clubs have a community outreach. And politically many other clubs have a tradition of taking up a stance. You look around all the big derbies or el classicos around the world and you'll get clubs that are associated with some or other political/ethnic/religious tradion to one degree or another. Everton in the late nineteeenth and early twentieth centuries gave gate money and charitable donations to unemployed workers causes and even allowed collections for striking workers. Everton aren't unique in that - many other clubs will have examples of this type of activity too. That's because clubs are big organisations that have a pull outside football with audiences that they have to keep onside. Inherently they're not social or political...they just have to be to a certain extent.

In that light, Barca are just a football club

The "more than a club" thing is nonsense, but given the environment in which they exist - ie: one that is still dominated by Real Madrid, and in a nation that is as regionally divided as Spain is (Athletic Bilbao are far more "we are the community" than Barcelona are, for example), its not surprising that it exists and that they trade off it. The UNICEF point is spot on as well, they are after all just a very rich modern football club with all that that entails - no different from the RS or Utd, apart from being much better run and with more involvement from the fans (davek you are wrong about the socio element not being that important - they follow people like Laporta because he runs the club well and brings success, not because he cons them.. its much better than ending up with Jesús Gil, for example).

That said, I am not sure what the article in the OP was on about with regards to the players mentioned - they paid an acceptable price (indeed its probably his buyout clause fee) to Valencia for Villa, and all they are doing with regards to Fabregas is what Arsenal did to them*, albeit they will be paying a big fee for him.

* and which Arsenal will probably try to do to us for Arteta.

Fair enough mate. Good observations. The point about Athletic Bilbao is spot on. Any club that behaves in that purist manner regarding Basque pedigree simply is more than a club. I'd forgotten about that. Quite right.

Really? I thought I made a decent shout for why Barca are a great sporting club, and prefer to bring through their own talent rather than buying a title win.

Weird.

No, as per usual you went straight to the insults. How I'm 'a weapon' and 'a miserable get' for giving my opinion I dont know.

Have to say after reading that article again, it just sounds like complete jealousy. Barcelona have a televisual style of football? what the **** does that even mean? Barcelona win trophies, win games, score goals, play great football. Isn't that what we are all in the sport for?

What a pleb of epic proportions this blogger is.

In the last game of the season where Barca won the title they had something like 7 home grown players in the side, the front 3 were all homegrown and the big money signing was on the bench.

So what if they are signing Fabregas or Villa, these are great players who want to play with other great players - they have given their respective clubs the chance to improve the side, and what have they done? Valencia have been a disgrace off the field for a good number of years, and have not always been able to pay players wages. Arsenal? Have sold off their best players and replaced them with kids who are 5 or 6 years in the making.

Fabregas and Villa deserve to be playing with the best players and winning the major trophies.

End of. Now stop moaning you unbearable man.

Does have a point. What does it mean?

Does anyone else find Brazil annoying? Just saying.

It's that type of comment that underlines the attitude the bloigger was getting at. The hype around Brazil does make them annoying, yes. "It's Brazil...it must be good". Someone should send them a dvd of the ugly Brazil sides of the late 70s and much of the 80s.

Yes but FACTS SAY THE REAL STORY!!!!!

Brazil are seen as good because they are ******* good. They work hard at it.

Do lads look at 6ft 4 blonde haired lads with 6 packs and tans and think, ooh aren't they annoying, when all they want to be is like them.

I'll echo what I have said, this line of blogging is sour grapes, green envy, nothing more nothing less. It's not like Barca are going round showing their arses to everyone else.

Messi scored his 47th goal of the season and he went straight over to his mum in the crowd. Surely that's what it's all about.

Pathetic some people.
