Wildlife in your Garden

I have a garden pond it used to look great 2 waterfall rock features fish lots of plants floating lilies etc cost a small fortune
then my neighbors cats kept coming in killing the fish and leaving them on my lawn little smart arses
lost interest in it after that turned the filter pumps off now its a overgrown stagnant mess that frogs use for orgies in the summer

It's all in the eye of the beholder. In my opinion a 'wildlife' pond is far more interesting than some sterile ornamental pond with crystal clear water and (often non-native) 'pet' fish.
Just adding water to the garden ensures that nature takes care of the rest. I have never introduced any form of life to my pond which is now teeming with life, which in turn brings more wildlife to the rest of the garden. My philosophy is "Build it and they will come"
Ponds are by far the most valuable tool for encouraging wildlife througout the garden.

Mrs Fox brings a couple of her cubs into ours at the moment. Their shrieking at 0245 every morning is a bit scary when it wakes you from a deep sleep but every now and then I'll get up and watch them having a play.
Other than that I do what I can for the wild birds (btw where have all the starlings gone??) with feed and so on and marvel at the squirrels who do their utmost to get into the "squirrel proof" bird feeders.

Starlings and House Sparrows are massively in decline due to farming becoming much more efficient and creating " sterile " fields.

So there`s no food for them in the Winter, when they move out of the towns and into the countryside.

Stunning stag beetle. Do you have plenty trees in your garden? They are more often found in woodland.
BTW they are an endangered species so if you are planning any building in the garden (house extension etc) you're better keeping quiet about it. lol
One sycamore and a whole lot of tree bark mulch! I’ve seen about 4 over the last couple of weeks having seen none previously so something has changed. It was a pretty good surprise
