Wildlife in your Garden

Deer are (unfortunately for my plants!) common in our California garden, particularly after the winter rains stop and their forage in the nearby park dries up. We periodically see skunks, raccoons and the odd coyote trots down the street.

When we first moved here and our garden was a lot more overgrown one of our cats was dabbing at something on the ground and when I went over to see what she had found it was a bit of a shock to realise it was a tarantula - in the autumn the males go out wandering to find a mate. We also used to get gopher snakes in the garden, sadly we now just seem to have the gophers :(. I love the Alligator lizards, although the cats sometimes bring them into the house and it can be hell fishing them out from under furniture they have hidden under!

My favourite garden wildlife are the Anna hummingbirds, the males do a fantastic courtship display where they ascend about 100ft in to the air and then dive bomb back to the ground making a quite incredible noise. They also regularly have aerial dog fights, once had 5 going at each other like a scene in Top Gun.
