Wildlife in your Garden

The botanical garden in Phoenix is beautiful in the spring

Yup, it's a 5-10 min drive to there for me. Another Echinopsis bloomed in the cactus garden on Monday. Was still up North fishing so didn't get to see it first-hand but she got a few pics. I'd like to get most of them out of pots soon, preferably this weekend, before it gets absolutely roasting.

Massive flowers, for it's size...will be a colour storm in there when they all have another 5+ years of growth and can support more blooms.

I read something this week, that said that instead of Birds of Prey flourishing during the lockdown, gamekeepers had taken advantage of the lack of people about to shoot, trap and poison birds like Hen Harriers / Buzzards on Grouse Moors and that the reported numbers of illegal killings was massively up from this year.

The true number will probably never be known, as most of it`s going on in remote places, with no witnesses about to find the dead birds :(

So many pheasants and grouse getting released these days. Roadsides are littered with dead game birds round here. Huge amounts of money changing hands and these guys think they are a law unto themselves. Heard stories from way back of them clearing out all natural predators, including wildcats etc.
Chris packham was recently calling for research into how much impact the release of these birds has on our ecosystems.

That's your tory minions for you, doing the masters bidding

Seen out woodpecker a lot recently - its getting more assured of our presence. Also gets nearer the house, like a lot of other animals at the moment desperate to find water.

Worth putting some bowls of water about the place folks.

Sound advice, but why not make a pond Chris? Even the smallest garden pond will benefit the wildlife. ;)
If there is room to put out a bowl of water, there is room for a permanent pond.

Totally agree - I love a pond and have dug several in my time, each frequented by newts and dragonflies before too long.

I also have a wife who swells up like elephant man at mosquito bites, so sadly its yet another avenue of pleasure that marriage has closed to me.
