Wildlife in your Garden

I had read Liverpool had them but wasn't sure whereabouts , I think Glasgow has a big colony , must like city parks .

They like mature trees with holes to nest in, which quite often means large gardens and bird feeders.

I`ve read they`re becoming a bit of a pest, as they " throw " other birds out of nesting holes and also have quite a varied diet, which includes the chicks and eggs of other birds !

I always think that there is something nearly prehistoric about herons. Strange looking if you can get close to one

It`s on the lockout for some poor suckers gold fish / koi pond.

Over the garden yesterday what I thought was a hawk chasing a Herring gull but it turned out to be a Ring Necked parakeet , took this photo about 6 weeks ago . (Wirral)
I believe there are thousands in London .

There is one that is a regular in the pond/marsh area that has formed on the left after told vicars house in the park. ?

West Kirby had a hoopoe last year.

You’d be surprised where they turn up. At the farne islands on the north east coast, they have a list of birds spotted over the year and hoopoe was on that.
See them fairly often in the parks here in Portugal. Great bird.

That's the only place I've seen them , we stayed at a ground floor Golfing apartment and they were right in front of our patio every morning stabbing the grass for grubs .

Stunning bird, seen them in Spain on holiday.

Their call is amazing and fits their name perfectly.

After someone's pond fish, a lethal predator - I have to use a net on mine otherwise they would eat the lot .....
I went out one day two sat on the fence, lobbed a house brick at them .....

Live not far from a Golf course with a lake - thats where they come from - if they land in your pond they catch every fish for a light snack ....lol

Seen one catch a massive eel once and one time (on what must have been a weird internet day) watched a video of one eating a massive rat.
