My memory isnt the best, but I recall some pushback, people suggesting it was a bit high, saying we shouldnt pay more than 20.

But yes, in hindsight 28m for Lukaku was a steal, 40m for Richarlison a decent price and 45m for Iceland a crime against football.

I guess we find out in 4 years if the 32m for Gnooo was worth it.

Well you're deliberately missing my point then, because my point was clearly that if paying 30m for Gnonto prevents us from paying 30m needed for Beto then it's backwards. You may well think there are better strikers we can get but if they aren't cheaper then my point stands. The fee is more relevant to my point than the player.
