Well yeah if you're not going to pay any attention whatsoever to their positions maybe Gnonto is a better use of 30m than Beto in terms of potential, but it's not how you build a squad and building a squad keeps you in the league.

Well, if youre talking about "building a squad":

This and next season we have DCL, Chermiti and Cannon who could all play up top. 3 players competing for 1 position.

Conversely we have McNeil and Dobbin beyond this season for 3 positions.

Surely if were "building" a squad then we need to be focused on filling positions beyond this season?

I would much rather us go after Dodi Lukebakio.

Similar negotiation position given Hertha was relegated last season, and the player would be cheaper, has a higher ceiling, has greater athleticism, and most importantly fits a massive glaring need within our squad.

£13 million deal to Burnley was agreed but the player turned down the move ( despite the prospect of being managed by his nations golden boy ) and now on the verge of a move to Seville.
Interestingly 777 have a stake ( no pun intended) in Hertha.
Could they deliver us Dodi aa goodwill gesture prior to taking an interest in Everton ? Probably not , especially as they also have a stake in Seville.

My comment on ceiling is less about Lukebakio, and more about how lowly I rate Gnonto's potential.

Let's all remember we are discussing the 6th best winger on a relegated Leeds team from last year.

I imagine if he trains hard and gets match time (unlikely) he could come to be about as good as Anthony Knockaert. Is that potential worth 27 - 32M?

Very grateful the move to Burnley didn't go through. I would not want him with our direct competition in staying up this season.

If we had a competent board perhaps we could leverage some relationships to get a move, but alas, we do not.
