If we buy Carvalho there will be no place in the team for McCarthy. Can't see Koeman playing with two sitting mid-fielders, I think he will want someone like Witsel to go box to box. Could be that is the future he sees for Barkley.
I think Koeman will expect more from the players on the pitch.

I think that McCarthy is a different type of player than a lot seem to think. He has been used as a defensive midfielder particularly by Ireland but also by RM.
McCarthy I think is best suited to a box-to-box role midfielder. He covers an enormous amount of ground he can cover back to help out in defence but is well able to get forward and we have seen him score on the rare occasion he is allowed to do so. It is a hugely demanding role and I think it is a role that suits Barkley very well also, I would not be surprised to see the two of them rotate.
It is only when we see who actually does arrive that we will have a better idea of what is planned.
I do hope and do expect that next season we may rotate the squad a little more.
Last season you were in or out of the team.
I hope that this season there will be weekly changes on a small scale to ensure that we use the squad rather than just eleven.

Personally, I'd keep McCarthy. I imagine will RK will want a starter and a backup in each role:

Ball winner DM: Carvalho, McCarthy

Deep Playmaker: Barry, Gibson

Box-to-box CM: Witsel, Besic (?)

Just my opinion, but that's what I'd do; just to have the option to change specific attributes for different matches.

There are only 2 positions available with Barkley playing in the 10 role.
Add Davies and cleverly, and you have 8 player's for 2 positions.
If you don't get many injuries 4 will be sitting in the stands every week.
6 is plenty. I would sell McCarthy abd cleverly. Let's hope the stoke rumours are true
