Honestly could have been worse. There is a massive gulf between the two teams. A lot of the NI girls are amateur/part time players. Norway took their foot off the gas a fair it though.

They were humiliated.

There should be a unified Irish team, like in the rugby. They might stand a chance of getting some results.

They weren’t even expected to qualify for the tournament, they’re pretty much, in the Womens game, the equivalent of say a North Macedonia or Albania at the last two mens Euros, there for the experience and not expected to make any real damage

They should maybe think of having their own identity: both the N.I. mens and womens team. It can strengthen resolve. Instead they choose to be seen as appendages.

Not an unimportant point in sport.

I don't think the players get to make that choice...

I watched it until it was 2-0 after 13 minutes. Then gave up. I suppose 4-1 in the end was at least respectable.

Their achievement was getting to the tournament. That might sound pretty small time, but it's true. It was an enormous shock. Most of the players play in the local Irish league which is mainly played in the evenings after work.

This would be all well an good and I don't completely disagree, but there are sports women play more predominately than men, that get next to no coverage. Netball has been on sky for a few years, hockey which is played to a high level by both sexes isn't on mainstream TV.

Those 'products' should have been screened more and a 'fanbase' grown. By all means push football, but push all female sport equally.
Sure that would be nice, but football is the most accessible one really.

Women's football is still a niche sport, it's getting more interest but it's a niche area of a major sport. Showing hockey or netball would be showing a niche area of a niche sport, it would take way more work and probably wouldn't improve much in terms of viewership, at least short term.

The numbers for the women's football games are pretty impressive. More importantly I am often seeing more girls just having a kick around in the park etc and I think that's boss. You never really used to see that and any girls playing football was more often than not for a team as opposed to just having some fun.

Football is becoming the most accessible one because it's been pushed so heavily to be. It's great girls are playing it, but if the achievements of women in other sports were celebrated and pushed, maybe things would be different.

What makes a sport 'niche'? This is definitely an assumption but isn't netball played at nearly every school in the country by girls. If it's niche because it's not been on the tele or 'only women will watch it', well that feels v much like the perception of football up to the 80s an 90s.
