World Cup 2022

I disagree with you a little bit. I think England will have other chances to go deep in tournaments, when you look at the quality of players coming through I think they will have a pretty strong team for the next 10-15 years. That is not to say they're nailed on to win things but they should be looking at QFs minimum in that time and then see from there.

Why does it matter if players are likeable or not? Because for a long time the England squad was full of self-entitled big time charlies. I don't see it as a problem that the current squad come across as humble and decent lads.

I definitely think England's draw is tougher than it looks and I agree there is tons of banana skin potential there. But it could've been much worse also.
Oh, I'm not disputing that England will go deep into tournaments over the coming years. This one, for starters, looks like it will be a quarter-final minimum. I do, however, think they've missed their best chance to win a tournament. The circumstances will simply not be as favourable again - until Euro 2028 anyway. As for likeability, I don't think it matters. Luis Suarez is a hateful figure, but what a magnificent footballer he has been. Regardless, this idea that the current England squad is likeable is a dubious notion. While it was wonderful to see so many of them standing up to the racists and right-wing Conservatives on matters of discrimination, they were rather more silent on another huge issue of the day: vaccination - especially given the dramatically lower levels of vaccination in the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga and Serie A. So, while I don't think it matters whether they are likeable or not, they are not quite the shining liberal lights that some might once have painted them as. That said, I don't expect them to be role models. I expect them to be bloody good footballers (given their earnings, etc.). Some of them are. Most of them are pretty lucky to be earning what they are given their more modest talents.

Suarez was a national hero in Uruguay, detested in this country

England will probably get through the group but I can't see them being as lucky with the draw as they have been in the last 2 tournaments.
First team of class they face they'll fold.

How anyone expects a dullard like Southgate - who cant even get subs right - to outwit the world's best managers is beyond me, but the Crusaders will still believe....and end up crying...standing their in the glare of the global media wearing their stupid chainmail suits blubbing away like the crank stockbrokers they are.

Hear hear.

The world's best managers don't manage international teams, they are generally old managers who don't want the day to day involvement, or moderate club managers like Southgate or Deschamps.

It’s a tough ask for Canada to get out of that group, we know Croatia are decent and if I’m honest I would back Morocco over Canada in a game.

That being said it’s the World Cup so anything can happen.
Canada topped qualifying in CONCACAF, quite easily I might add. Over the US and Mexico, who people on here generally rate as half way decent. We should have a poll for which seeded team is expected to go out in the first round...my pick actually would be Belgium.

I can't quite get my head around how they got so good so quickly...they've been a shambles most of my life, not having made the final round of qualifying in an eternity.

Canada have a fantastic crop of youngsters.

This young USA team in Qatar will be about building experience with that young squad and being ready for 2026, Football over there will go up a level or two with a potentially exciting USA team in a home World Cup at home.

Flick, Enrique and LVG are the only top class coaches there IMO

Too much savvy for Southgate:

Deschamps
Enrique
Flick
Martinez
Van Gaal
Tite
Martinez plays exactly the same way as Southgate. 2 defensive midfielders, and hope to nick one. It seems to be the way a lot of international teams play these days.

England could run into the Dutch in the last 16. If that happens they could find it very difficult indeed. The Dutch under LVG will be a different proposition.

Going to be a great tournament I think. I'm expecting plenty of surprises.
