All the human rights stories in the run up to this: I'm not reading them now. I know what that regime is and that the western media's reaction to them is conveniently transient - forgotten in two months time.

That Guardian football page is practically unreadable with its whiny arsed condemnations. Just STFU and allow us some peace for a few weeks to enjoy football, you horrendous bunch of hand wringers.

Shut up and play the hits!

They're a reflection of the public majority and the reflection will only become clearer now that they can track "engagement" with everything... us, in our comfy chairs. Netflix subscription rate increase?... now there's some serious business.

The meek shall inherit the Earth; we better nuke them.

Interesting little line here in the Qatar preview

"
National anthem
As-Salam al-Amiri translates as Peace to the Emir and was adopted in 1996 after the accession to the throne of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. The lyrics speak of national pride, Qatar’s strength when it needs to show strength and peace when it should be peaceful. It was written by Skeikh Mubarak bin Sayf al-Thani and composed by Abdulaziz Nassir al-Ubaydan al-Fakru."

Things are now starting to make some sense...
To be fair that's a bit like when a Christian vicar says, "peace be with you" to a congregation - in this case the emir as the poem was dedicated him.

It's no worse than plenty of other national anthems. I think there's one that goes "God save our gracious king, long live our noble king" - f*** the rest of the population, just so long as the pampered royal lives a long and happy life!

"Send him victorious, happy and glorious" - while the 2nd verse contains stuff like "Scatter her enemies, and make them fall/Confound their politics, frustrate their knavish tricks".

Qatar's is sensible compared to that claptrap!

The issue of Qatar winning the world Cup bid should have been addressed more vitriolically than it was at the time by everymedia outlet and every football authority but as usual they just sit on their hands and play ball to the powers that be. I can't take this world Cup seriously for many reasons. They're holding it in the winter cause its too hot for the players in the summer, but it's OK for the workers to build the stadiums in the summer. WTAF.
It should have been addressed by every FA saying "We will not be entering a team into the competition, and we will not be disrupting our domestic season"
