World Snooker Championship

Jimmy is full of excuses. The fact is, White would have won a bundle of world titles and would be seen as an all-time great and the natural successor to Higgins and Davis had Hendry not come along.

Ronnie had been on the tour for seven seasons and had a Masters and a few UKs under his belt by that point. Higgins, who Williams beat in the semi, was reigning world champion. Williams himself already had a Masters and a UK title under his belt.
Yep, when the class of 92 started to get in gear then Henry was finished. Instead of having one top drawer player there was then 4 and others like Selby, Robertson and Trump have since joined them and others.
The standard Is superior to when Hendry was king.

Obviously, but Hendry's last world title is the most impressive in the sport due to the competition he dispatched along the way.

Hendry's problem was he got snooker's equivalent of dartitis. The same issue ruined Eric Bristow and Sandy Lyle's careers in their respective sports.

(I guess you could say snooker, darts and golf are "sports" rather than sports lol )

Hendry at his best would have have remained competitive with today's players for far longer than he did. However one of the fascinating things with snooker is how players have stayed at the top for far longer than they used to. Hendry himself says that only O'Sullivan and Trump have gone on to better the standard of snooker he set when he was in his prime.

You can’t compare era’s for me.
The game has changed so much.
If Alex Higgins was playing Selby he’d lose his rag and it would kick off wouldn’t it..
Zhao would leather Cliff Thorburn nine times out of ten.. he couldn’t handle the shot selections..
Hendry didn’t adapt and learn safety, simple as that.
He’s being given a wild card for events next season though, and maybe he will put the practice in this time and prove me wrong ?

Higgins is a one of the toughest competitors there has ever been in Snooker.. if Ronnie doesn't turn or is off his game by an inch then Higgins will take full advantage.

Hmm. I agree different era are hard to compare in any sport, but I think you're probably selling Hendry a little short. While its true that he was never quite in the same class as the best tactical players (I'd say Davis, J Higgins & Selby) that wasn't his natural game, as he was more of an attack minded player who relied on his long game and break building.
I think Hendry summed it up well a couple of years ago - while the overall standard today is higher, at the very top the standard is still about the same, and at his best Hendry would be a major contender in today's game.
I'm not Hendry's greatest fan but the guy took the game to another level of professionalism, making him an absolute winning machine who would have competed and held his own in any era. Today's top players all mould their game around how Hendry played.

Going into the pack early is deffo what modern players have learned from him, hence the amount of Ton breaks.

( fuming I didn’t back the record to be broken at 11/8 this year as well btw )
