Worst Squad Since Early 2000s

This team is not the worst in terms of ability, but is definitely the worst in terms of mentality. I can't remember an Everton team of the past where the players didn't care.

This one feels like the out of contract players have conspired to relegate us. Calvert lewin and doucoure being the prime examples.
This is my fear I do get a Leicester the year they went down with players out of contract vibe about us too. Its why we need to try something different get the fringe players in and some new faces to have a chance

Don't see that myself.

The deficiencies I see are skill and confidence.

Don't agree with the initial post. So much of this is down to significant deficiencies in key areas and poor coaching/decisions:

Pickford is class and Virginia has looked like a decent number 2 when he has played.

Branthwaite is a fantastic talent and Tarkowski is a good defender. Both have dropped off this year as we have got worse, but they can get that back. O'Brien has a lot of potential and I liked what I saw when I watched him play for Lyon. Heck, there are even people here who think Keane is dependable (not me).

Garner is a quality footballer and we have really missed him this year imo. Gana and Mangala are really good. Iroegbunam looks a proper player but probably needs to be played further forward. Harrison Armstrong has huge potential.

We have probably never had a player who can carry the ball like Ndiaye - such a good player- but the way we use him means he is always too far from goal to threaten. I don't rate McNeil much, but he has the capability to score good goals and put in decent crosses and has Beckham-esque set piece delivery. Lindstrom is a very talented footballer (anyone who saw him play in that Frankfurt side would know that) but there is the question of if he is suited to the PL. What he certainly isn't suited to is playing on the wing against combative defences - it's why it didn't work for him at Napoli - but we just keep playing him there.

Up front - Broja has a huge amount of ability and potential but is made of glass, as we have seen. Chermiti is an undoubted talent - even the dinosaur seemed to like him despite the fact he is young. And Beto has scored goals in his previous clubs because he has the ball slipped through for him to run onto. He does have his limitations, but he is very good at that. We don't play him that way. We got a snapshot against Peterborough and that rare throughball from Armstrong. Look at Beto's composure. DCL would have fluffed that. And despite the fact we don't use him correctly at all, his goals to minutes ratio is okay.

At RB we have a talented player in Patterson who is excellent going forward but needs to work on the defensive side. Funnily enough you do that through games and we don't play him! Young is reasonably solid and Seamus plays well when he plays but his body is giving up.

The terrible players are Jack Harrison - plays all the time because he runs around. Doucoure (ditto). Mykolenko and DCL (plays all the time because he is good in the air) but you cannot have a forward who fluffs every chance unless you have a team that scores goals for fun.

So the biggest issue is that it is our worst players who contribute the least who keep getting picked. They limit us but our myopic manager kept picking them for their defensive contributions. It was so disappointing to see Moyes do the same and I hope he sees through this quickly.

If we stop playing them through a combination of signings and using other players in the squad, we'll be just fine.

I thought this lot were a top half team in waiting who only needed to practice some passing and a manager who ‘plays to win’ and then all of a sudden we’d be sauntering into the top half?

Don’t tell me the exact same physical and technical shortcomings have stayed the same even though we’ve replaced the manager?

It’s almost as though what the teams really needs is a load more investment in good players rather than it being the sole fault of the last 7 managers.
x2 training session and one game against a champions league team is confirmation that's it solely down to the players?

Apart from bottom of the league we have the worst full backs the worst right wing the worst number 10 and a forward who can't score, the early 2000 squad is far superior, I doubt there is many evertonians alive who have seen a worse squad.

Well 97/98 springs instantly to mind to be honest.

A half-blind goalkeeper. Phelan, Ward, Tiler, Oster, Williamson, O'Kane, Tony Thomas, Claus Thomsen, John Spencer, Gavin McCann, Gareth Farrelly, Peter Beagrie, Paul Gerrard, Michael Branch.

But sure, this squad is worse 🙄

I agree, go through that squad and you won’t find many that aren’t trying, Lack of ability and lack of caring are two completely different things.
We’ve had squads as bad as this but always had a couple of very very good players who would paper over the cracks, and would manage to create or score goals.

Yeah, this isn't Manchester United's squad, where it often looks like none of them want to be there.

Garner is a player that’s become world class by being injured. Has dead little impact on a game, doesn’t pass well. Can cross at least and might be an answer on the right wing but it’s honestly because all other options are crap.

Patterson is god awful. Far too lightweight. Bournemouth picked him off for fun. As others have said, three managers so far havent rated him.

McNeil being called Beckham-esque in any way shape or form is laughable.

Beto gives Niasse a run for the worst technical footballer to have played up front for us. Chermeti has done the square sum of eff all.

The idea that there’s a group of amazing players hidden in this pile of raw sewage must be of some comfort when the reality is they are utter garbage.

Apart from that. Everythings fine lol.
There will be pub quiz questions in 15 years time.

"What English club had the worst number 10 of all time?"

This side is considerably worse and way less likeable then any team from the 2000's or the 90's. I'd so so far to say that if it wasn't for the fact that we've been relegated twice this would be the worst side in the clubs entire history and even then I'd say that was up for debate. They're definitely the most unlikeable side in the clubs entire history and its not even close.
Not a chance. That team that Koeman splurged half a billion on was far far far more dislikable. They were totally half arsed in everything they did, with proper tossers like Ashley Williams at the heart of it.

This current crop are terrible footballers, but like others have said, there's no doubting their effort.

It depends which way you look at it really. This side is undoubtedly better than that one as a direct comparison, but relative to the quality of the rest of the league it's a bit different.
