Would you pay £24m for Lukaku?

What is the maximum you'd pay for Rom?

I don't think he is being asked to do any more than he was at first tbh. I think the way we're setting up is to keep his job relatively simple and keep him to the middle third of the pitch. We're looking for pacy wingers and creative players to go with our wing-backs to create the chances to finish in the box. Pienaar being the exception because he's just ace paired with Baines.

At least I hope so, because to me, his best quality above all isn't his turning running with the ball, it's his finishing and his runs into the box. Don't get me wrong, his goals against Arsenal, Hull and several goals for WBA are examples of why that's an ace ability he has, but his best feature is the way he can make an intelligent run for the winger/full back to pick him out and that if he is picked out, he's finishing it. His goals last season show it perfectly. The goals vs West Ham (h), Newcastle (h&a), Southampton, Villa, Stoke, Swansea show him making space for himself, telling the assister where he wants it and making brilliant runs that he ends up finishing superbly.

His play in the penalty area is second to almost no one in the league. If we can get cut-backs and low crosses in to him at the rate we were back when Jelavic was enjoying his purple patch, he'll score 25+ this season. I think to point to his touch and hold-up play when it's not going well is to overlook the fact that he's probably just not been getting service. We'll all forget about his hold-up play if we just give him good service.

Agree, but the issue is that he's being asked to drop off and then make those runs, meaning he's too easy to pick up as he's coming alone from deep and the defender just sees him coming and sticks to him. The area of his game he is best at is where he's in the advanced position early and can peel away as the attack flows toward him, finding the spare yard of two to escape and slot.

In short, the way we're playing doesn't allow him any chance whatsoever of getting on a defenders' blind side.

So I'm already hearing the old 'our striker gets no service' myth. Heard that throughout the Moyes too, this from a side who has consistently finished in the top 6/7 in the league. Strikers just do not get handed 4/5 clear cut chances per match in the Premier League.

spot on sadly he would have thrived at the RS with the likes of coutinho and sterling putting in through balls, Martinez needs to address this as neither Naismith or Osman will provide this type of service to him. my only hope is he switches to a 4-3-3 with besic operating in a similar role to gerrard and pump the ball to the front 3 of atsu, lukaku and mirallas all running at pace on the counter, either that or he needs to get a ben arfa type in who can play behind lukaku in ross's absence

It's not no service - it's that he's not being allowed to get into positions to receive the service in the first place, as he isn't the focal point of the attack; wide areas are.

He is the service.

I don't know where you're getting the bolded bit from. The video of his goals shows him making different kind of runs all throughout the season. There are instances where he has let the defence go and held back to create space (West Ham), instances where he's been right on the offside line in front of goal (Newcastle, Swansea, Stoke) and instances where he's stayed away from the play, dragging defenders with him before going to meet the final ball in the space created (Southampton, Villa). All different runs against different types of defences.

You're suggesting defenders had him sussed to an extent last season. Not true at all, for me. To point to that video again, it's pretty much a masterclass in off the ball number 9 play. However we play, Rom will still be able to find space. The only instance in which he won't is when we take far too long faffing around out wide, giving the defence time to organise, which happened a fair bit last season. Our wingers under-performed last year. Pienaar, Mirallas (improved later on) and Deulofeu all had average seasons. Sure, he got some service, but he put 90 odd percent of his chances away or at least on target. He barely missed. He did his job fine. To get him to 20 goals rather than 15, he needs better service.

We're not questioning him based on 1 game for gods sake, there is no kneejerk reactions, we are just airing our views based on his Everton career so far and saying 28 million pound could of been spent better

You my friend have been a thoroughbred when it comes to dissing lukaku. You are getting excited because he had a bad game your comment says as much.

I however would like to elude to facts 16 goals in 33 appearances last season. That's his Everton career so far dude xx

cheers for the neg rep for first post - apologies for having an opinion that you don't concur with.

Some football fans have opinions that differ from others - when backed up with tangible reasons they are still dismissed...

Anyhow, is it inconceivable to state state that Lukaku was marked out of the game on Saturday and offered very little imagination or tenacity to break free of the shackles?

Its not the first time we have seen this. I watched him closely in the world cup and barring his cameo against an exhausted USA defence he looked very ineffective.

He made performances very similar in games last season where fitness could not be used as an excuse.

I think you have made some very good and honest opinions without going over the top, you in no way deserve to be neg rep'd for having a point of view, some people are so childish and vindictive

Although he's obviously not fully match fit, anyone else think his general play in the Arsenal game was far and away better than what we saw from December onwards? His first touch, passing and hold up play was much more in keeping with what we expect. Hopefully this continues through the season.

My dad & brother still don't rate him that much. Without sounding elitist here you can't half tell the difference in opinion between a fan who knows a lot about Everton & footy in general than one who has only a little more than a passing interest in the setup of the team. A common argument I hear is that he's "lazy" and at £28m he should be chasing everything down and dragging the team on by himself in the majority of games. Absolute bollocks.

Yes, very impressed with him against le arse. He didn't look as quick on the break as I expected but I think that's down to his fitness, which will come.

Be weird seeing him play against Chelsea.

That burst down the right said it all about our Rom. Power to beat Mertesacker, intelligence to knock it past the defender and hop over then sprint away, and subtlety to tease the ball through to wee Naisy to knock home. Superb play.
